Batch filtration system for preparation of sterile fluid for renal

A method and device for blood treatments that use fluids such as dialysate and replacement fluid for renal replacement therapy. In an embodiment, fluid is passed either by pump or passively by gravity feed, through a microporous sterilization filter from a fluid source to a replacement fluid container. The latter forms a batch that may be used during treatment. The advantage of forming the batch before treatment is that the rate of filtering needn't match the rate of consumption during treatment. As a result, the sterilization filter can have a small capacity. In another embodiment, a filter is placed immediately prior to the point at which the sterile fluid is consumed by the treatment process. The latter may be used in combination with the former embodiment as a last-chance guarantee of sterility and / or that the fluid is free of air bubbles. It may also be used as the primary means of sterile-filtration.

Portable baking oven

A portable baking oven for a pizza or other food item includes a food item heating plate, a base having a heating chamber, and a top cover having a moisture vent and a heat reflector structure extending across the inside of said top cover. When placed on said base, the top cover forms a baking chamber above the heating plate. Heat produced in the base's heating chamber circulates up through air passageways in the base into the baking chamber above the food item heating plate. This circulated heat is reflected back down toward the food item heating plate by the top cover's heat reflecting structure to accelerate baking of the top of a food item placed on the heating plate. The top cover's moisture vent can be located above the heat reflector structure in the top cover, and openings can be provided in the heat reflector structure which allow moisture emitted by a food item being baked in the oven to pass through the reflector structure and out through the top cover moisture vent.

Technique for applying direct resistance heating current to a specific location in a specimen under test while substantially reducing thermal gradients in the specimen gauge length

A technique for imparting direct resistance heating to a gauge length of a conductive metallic specimen under test and which can be used to add an independent dynamic thermal capability to a mechanical material test system. Specifically, a pair of, e.g., conductive collars, each of which encircles and abuts against a corresponding portion of the external surface of the specimen near an opposing end of its gauge length and inward of a corresponding grip. Each collar imparts additional self-resistive heat to the specimen along a circumferential collar / specimen interface. This additional heat appreciably reduces or cancels thermal gradients otherwise arising from self-resistive heating across the gauge length as well as compensates for thermal losses in each specimen end section. Through this arrangement, each specimen end section and the grips are not appreciably heated as the gauge length heats. The amount of additional heat is set by selecting a collar material to have a desired resistivity and also by appropriately dimensioning each collar.

Low thermal inerta scanning adiabatic calorimeter

A new adiabatic scanning calorimeter allows the thermal mass of a high-pressure reaction vessel to be dynamically compensated during a test. This allows the effective Φ factor for the experiment to be reduced to 1.0 without the use of complex pressure balancing equipment. Endothermic events can be quantified and sample specific heats can be measured. The time required for test completion is much shorter than for conventional adiabatic calorimeters, thus considerably improving apparatus productivity. The sensitivity to exotherm detection is at least as good as existing adiabatic calorimeters employing the Heat-Wait-Search strategy, but does depend on the temperature-scanning rate. In addition, the heat of reaction is obtained without reference to the heat capacity of the sample, pressure is measured continuously, reactants may be injected into the test vessel and the sample can be mixed during the test.

Method for natural gas production

The present invention is a method and system for dissociating methane hydrate deposits in-situ. An oxidizer fluid and a supply of fuel, both at a pressure higher than that of the methane hydrate deposit, are supplied and delivered to the methane hydrate deposit. The fuel is combusted downhole by reacting it with the oxidizer fluid to provide combustion products. The combustion products are placed in contact with a diluent fluid to produce a heated product fluid. The heated product fluid is injected into the methane hydrate deposit whereby methane is dissociated from the methane hydrate and made available for extraction. In addition, carbon dioxide may be made available to promote the formation of carbon dioxide hydrates from the liberated methane hydrate water.
