The present invention relates to a communication system and method and, more particularly, to a fault tolerant network element for providing fault tolerant call connections in the event of a failure of, for example, a Gatekeeper or other part of a network. Calls set up across a network consume large amounts of resources both throughout the network and at the devices which form the end points of the network. Therefore, even though a call connection may be supported, in the event of the failure of a network element, it is often the case that there is an ungraceful failure or use of resources throughout the network. Accordingly, an aspect of the present invention provides a method for preserving a connection context at a first layer of a communication protocol; the communication protocol comprising a second, higher, signalling layer in which, in response to a switch-over from an active host to a standby host in the event of failure of the former, the connection is terminated in response to receipt of a signalling layer signal other than a disconnect or terminate signal.

A device (10, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90) is used to apply an electric pulse or spike to a patient to treat the patient. The device can have a series of preset treatments programmed therein. A user can select a treatment from menus displayed on a display (100). The impedance of the skin and underlying tissue to be treated can be measured prior to the treatment to locate active areas on the skin for treatment. The impedance measurement can be made at a sufficiently low level to avoid treatment of the patient that could cause a change in the impedance. A phase detector can be used to isolate the capacitance value in the impedance. The charge delivered to the patient can be measured and the device can adjust the charge as the skin impedance varies during treatment to deliver uniform charges to the skin. A variety of probes can be used with the device, with the device automatically detecting the type of probe attached. Multiple electrodes can be used on the probe, which allows the active areas in contact with the probe to be identified prior to treatment to allow the treatment to concentrate on the active areas.

Methods and system for providing image object boundary definition by particle filtering

Systems and methods are provided for interactive construction of an object boundary by minimizing a sum of costs, including costs associated with inconsistency of the image data and costs associated with undesired curve shape properties. A particle filter optimization algorithm is implemented that incorporates a variable strength, intrinsic preference for boundary smoothness. The particle filter generates alternative sequences of random moves, constructed in parallel, to avoid becoming stuck in local minima. Approximate optimization algorithms are utilized, keeping computational burden low, freeing resources to analyze intrinsic costs associated with local curvature. In one embodiment, a user may construct a curve by launching a particle stream, and by choosing visually satisfactory locations on the stream from which to relaunch particles. The user can also provide other input, such as drop down dams to redirect the stream at T-junctions. Additionally, a facility is incorporated to break the smoothness constraint automatically at corners of the object boundary.
