An intelligent user-side power management device (PMD) that is comprised of an optional energy storage unit and can interface with a utility grid or microgrid to eliminate power theft and efficiently provide clean energy to the users of the grid while helping the grid to do smart demand response management, particularly for renewable energy based grids that need to efficiently manage the slack due to the large variability in power generation through these energy sources.

A wireless mesh network is configured to manage a power grid. Each node within the wireless mesh network is configured to detect and classify voltage fluctuations in power supplied by an upstream transformer coupled to the power grid. When a given node detects a particular type of fluctuation (i.e., an “event”), the node generates a timestamped event classification that reflects the type of event and a time when the event occurred. A server configured to manage the wireless mesh network receives timestamped event classifications from each node within the wireless mesh network and then performs a time correlation with the received timestamped event classifications to determine which nodes detected similar events. A method of controlling power to a high intensity discharge lamp is also disclosed. The method comprises steps of generating a DC voltage for the high intensity discharge lamp by way of a boost/flyback converter; monitoring the DC voltage and the current generated in the boost/flyback converter; and modifying the power output by the boost/flyback converter to regulate power based upon the voltage and the current.
