A method and apparatus for coating a plurality of semiconductor devices that is particularly adapted to coating LEDs with a coating material containing conversion particles. One method according to the invention comprises providing a mold with a formation cavity. A plurality of semiconductor devices are mounted within the mold formation cavity and a curable coating material is injected or otherwise introduced into the mold to fill the mold formation cavity and at least partially cover the semiconductor devices. The coating material is cured so that the semiconductor devices are at least partially embedded in the cured coating material. The cured coating material with the embedded semiconductor devices is removed from the formation cavity. The semiconductor devices are separated so that each is at least partially covered by a layer of the cured coating material. One embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention for coating a plurality of semiconductor devices comprises a mold housing having a formation cavity arranged to hold semiconductor devices. The formation cavity is also arranged so that a curable coating material can be injected into and fills the formation cavity to at least partially covering the semiconductor devices.

A process is described for wavelength conversion of LED light using phosphors. LKD dies are tested for correlated color temperature (CCT), and binned according to their color emission. The LEDs (12) in a single bin are mounted on a single submount (24) to form an array of LEDs. Various thin sheets (51, 52, 53, 54) of a flexible encapsulant (e.g., silicone) infused with one or more phosphors are preformed, where each sheet has different color conversion properties. An appropriate sheet (51) is placed over an array of LED (12) mounted on a submount (24) , and the LEDs (12) are energized. The resulting light is measured for CCT. If the CCT is acceptable, the phosphor sheet (51) is permanently laminated onto the LEDs (12) and submount (24) . The lamination (51) encapsulates each LED (12) to protect the LEDs (12) from contaminants and damage. The LEDs (12) in the array of LEDs on the submount (24) are separated. By selecting a different phosphor sheet for each bin of LEDs, the resulting CCT is very uniform across all bins.

The basic components are as follows: a LED chip, a packaging support, a silica gel, a fluorescence sheet, a lens, a reflection cup and a heat sink. The fluorescence sheet is in a shape of a spherical crown, wherein the center of the sheet is thick and the edge of the sheet is thin. The fluorescence sheet is above the LED chip as well as the fluorescence sheet and the LED chip are separated from each other, wherein the space between the fluorescence sheet and the LED chip is filled with the transparent silica gel. The fluorescence sheet absorbs photon emitted by the LED chip; after the conversion at energies, the photon is converted into photon with a longer wave length; the converted photon is combined with transmitted light that is emitted by the LED chip and permeates through the fluorescence sheet so as to generate white light. The white LED provided in the invention has an exquisite design. According to the invention, a yellow effect of light of each side of an ordinary white light LED can be eliminated, and thus a color temperature of each angle of space is even with good uniformity. Therefore, according to the invention, white light LED with high performance and low cost can be manufactured.

The invention discloses a novel light emitting diode (LED) packaging structure. The structure comprises: a pedestal; a recessed cavity, which is formed in the pedestal; a heat sink, which is fixed in the recessed cavity; a cup bowl, which is formed on the heat sink; and an LED chip, which is fixed in the cup bowl. Besides, a pair of conductive feet are extended and are fixed in the pedestal; the LED chip is electrically connected with the conductive feet; a lens is formed on the pedestal and enables the LED chip and a part of conductive feet to be sealedly capped; and an external surface of the lens are provided with a layer of phosphor coating. According to the LED packaging structure provided in the invention, a traditional LED packaging mode is broken; a phosphor coating is directly transferred from an original chip surface to a surface of a lens, so that the phosphor coating is thoroughly far away from an LED chip and a luminous decay is substantially reduced; moreover, a shape and a thickness of the phosphor coating can be controlled accurately and an excitation area of the phosphor coating can be enlarged, so that an occurrence of a yellow ring can be avoided, a light extraction efficiency is improved and color temperatures of the phosphor coating are highly consistent.

A light emitting diode (LED) is disclosed comprising a plurality of semiconductor layers with a first contact on the bottom surface of the semiconductor layers and a second contact on the top surface of the semiconductor layer. A coating is included that comprises a cured binder and a conversion material that at least partially covers the semiconductor layers, wherein the second contact extends through the coating and is exposed on the same plane as the top surface of the coating. An electrical signal applied to the first and second contacts is conducted through the coating to the semiconductor layers causing the LED to emit light. In other embodiments first and second contacts are accessible from one side of the LED. A coating is included that comprises a cured binder and a conversion material. The coating at least partially covers the semiconductor layers, with the first and second contacts extending through the coating and exposed on the same plane as a surface of the coating. An electrical signal applied to the first and second contacts is conducted through the coating to the semiconductor layers causing the LED to emit light.

A method of enhancing a color temperature of a color image includes calculating gains for input image signals based on a predetermined gain function. A first offset value corresponding to a change in a pedetermined color temperature of output signals is calculated. A second offset value is calculated based on the gains and the first offset value.
