A scanning endoscope, amenable to both rigid and flexible forms, scans a beam of light across a field-of-view, collects light scattered from the scanned beam, detects the scattered light, and produces an image. A splitting arrangement may be provided which splits the electro-magnetic radiation into the first and second portions, and positioned closer to the sample than to the source of the electro-magnetic radiation, and the first and second portions may be adapted to propagate in different directions. Method for quadrature phase angle correction in a coherent receiver of a dual-polarization optical transport system

A method is provided for correcting a quadrature angle error that exists in the coherent receiver hardware of a dual-polarization optical transport system. The receiver hardware that causes the quadrature angle error is a 90 degree optical hybrid mixing device. The method involves generating an estimate of the quadrature angle error and compensating for the quadrature angle error by multiplying the first and second detected baseband signals by coefficients that are a function of the estimate of the quadrature angle error. The method is robust to severe channel distortion encountered within an optical fiber transmission channel as well as temperature effects and ageing of the 90 degree optical hybrid. The method is suited for a digital signal processing implementation in the coherent receiver when a modulation scheme used on a transmitted signal is quadriphase-shift keying (QPSK). In other embodiments, the method can be used to correct for quadrature angle error in modulation schemes such as binary PSK, M-ary PSK where M>4, or Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM). The method can be implemented by an application-specific integrated circuit(ASIC).

Apparatus and methods for the treatment of presbyopia using fiber-coupled-lasers

Systems and surgical techniques for presbyopia correction by laser removal of the sclera tissue are disclosed. The disclosed preferred embodiments of the system consists of a beam spot controller, a fiber delivery unit and a fiber tip. The basic laser including UV lasers and infrared lasers having wavelength ranges of (0.15-0.36) microns and (1.9-3.2) microns and diode lasers of about 0.98, 1.5 and 1.9 microns. Presbyopia is treated by a system which uses an ablative laser to ablate the sclera tissue outside the limbus to increase the accommodation of the ciliary body of the eye. The sclera tissue may be ablated by the laser with or without the conjunctiva layer open.

A video endoscope in which the imaging chip at the distal tip is connected to the proximal connector and operator console by an optical fiber. Video data (preferably digital) is impressed on the optical fiber by a pulse-code modulator (PCM) circuit and light emitter with lensing. A small, inexpensive, flexible optical fiber in the endoscope body conveys the PCM optical data to the receiving circuit, preferably via an optical connector at the proximal end of the endoscope, and to decoding and display circuits in the operator console. The fiber optic transmission overcomes the difficulty of electrical transmission of wide band (digital video) signals via miniature cables, which can be expensive, bulky, inflexible, susceptible to noise and interference, and constitute a potential electrical safety risk by leakage currents. Sequenced pulses of light from an excitation laser with at least two resonator cavities with separate output couplers are directed through a light modulator and a first polarzing analyzer. Optical synchronization system for femtosecond x-ray sources

Femtosecond pump / probe experiments using short X-Ray and optical pulses require precise synchronization between 100 meter-10 km separated lasers in a various experiments. For stabilization in the hundred femtosecond range a CW laser is amplitude modulated at 1-10 GHz, the signal retroreflected from the far end, and the relative phase used to correct the transit time with various implementations. For the sub-10 fsec range the laser frequency itself is upshifted 55 MHz with an acousto-optical modulator, retroreflected, upshifted again and phase compared at the sending end to a 110 MHz reference. Initial experiments indicate less than 1 fsec timing jitter. To lock lasers in the sub-10 fs range two single-frequency lasers separated by several teraHertz will be lock to a master modelocked fiber laser, transmit the two frequencies over fiber, and lock two comb lines of a slave laser to these frequencies, thus synchronizing the two modelocked laser envelopes.
