A dimmable electrodeless light source includes an electrodeless lamp, an electronic ballast and a dimming module. The light source further includes coupling transformers coupled to the electrodeless lamp for inductively coupling power to the lamp to generate light. An auxiliary winding electromagnetically coupled to the primary winding of at least one of the coupling transformers is driven by switching circuitry in the dimming module. The switching circuitry is pulse width modulated to control the average brightness of the light generated by the electrodeless lamp. An exemplary application for the dimmable electrodeless light source is as a backlight for a video display device, such as a liquid crystal display unit. The dimmable electrodeless light source further includes a magnetic shield device that is operably positioned with respect to the electrodeless lamp. The magnetic shield device produces a magnetic field that substantially opposes, and cancels, the magnetic field that is produced by the electrodeless lamp when energized. In an alternative embodiment, the magnetic shield device produces a magnetic field which, when combined with the lamp magnetic field, results in a total magnetic field that is substantially constant regardless of the energization level of the lamp (e.g., totally energized or dimmed). The magnetic shield thus reduces visual artifacts that might otherwise appear on a video display unit due to a variation of the magnetic field produced by the lamp.

The output wavelengths of an electrodeless lamp are controlled by passing a fluid over the surface of the lamp to control its temperature. The stabilized temperature prevents thermal runaway of the lamp and stabilizes the output wavelengths of the lamp. When the fluid passing over the lamp is water, the lamp can be used for sanitary treatment of the water. The treatment can be enhanced by shaping the electrodeless lamp to provide maximally effective water treatment.

Method for designing resonance parameters of resonant converter for electrodeless lamp

The invention relates to a method for designing resonance parameters of a resonant converter for an electrodeless lamp. The high-frequency LCCL resonant converter is composed of a half-bridge inverter circuit, a series-parallel resonant loop and a coupling coil, wherein the half-bridge inverter circuit is composed of a switch tube Q1 and a switch tube Q2, the series-parallel resonant loop is composed of a resonant inductor Lr, a resonant capacitor Cr, a blocking capacitor Cb and an excitation inductor Lc, and the coupling coil is composed of the excitation inductor Lc and an electrodeless lamp tube plasma discharging ring. After values of the Cb and the Lc are determined, the resonant parameters Lr and Cr are determined through a formula. In the formula, Leq and Req express an equivalent inductor and an equivalent resistor of the coupling ring auxiliary edge lamp tube plasma discharging ring mapped to the original edge, f expresses the work frequency of the resonant converter, and fo expresses the natural resonance frequency of the resonant loop. According to the method, it can be guaranteed that when the natural resonance frequency of the circuit is changed, ZVS soft switching of the electrodeless lamp can be still achieved, and the maximum power is output.

Electrodeless lamp fixture

The invention provides an electrodeless lamp fixture which comprises a lamp shade, an electrodeless lamp, a heat conduction metal rod, an excitation source, a main amalgam storage tube, an inner tube, a bulb glass shell, an excitation coil and an auxiliary amalgam, wherein the lamp shade is provided with a lamp holder; the electrodeless lamp is installed on the lamp holder and comprises a lamp opening which cooperates with the lamp holder; the heat conduction metal rod and the excitation source are installed on the lamp opening; a concave cavity is arranged between the inner tube and the heat conduction metal rod; the excitation coil is positioned in the concave cavity; the magnetic core of the excitation coil and the heat conduction metal rod form a socket joint; and the position of the auxiliary amalgam on the outer wall of the inner tube is the farthest away from the emergent surface of the lamp shade, so that the auxiliary amalgam is positioned at the highest point of the outer wall of the inner tube after the electrodeless lamp is installed on the lamp holder. The embodiment of the invention can ensure that the auxiliary amalgam is installed at the highest point of the outer wall of the inner tube, thus when the electrodeless lamp is started, hot gas ascends under the convection effect of gas, thereby ensuring highest temperature at the highest point. Therefore, the auxiliary amalgam is arranged in the position the temperature of which rises at the highest speed, thereby promoting mercury atoms to be evaporated out of the auxiliary amalgam so that the electrodeless lamp can be quickly started.
