Capacitive tactile tile sensor

A capacitive tile tactile sensor is described and includes several groups of individual sensors each controlled by a dedicated IC. Individual sensors are formed by sensing electrodes on one side of the sensor and a single ground electrode on the other side, the ground electrode is separated from the sensing electrodes by a compressible dielectric layer. A single electrical connection between the ground electrode and the sensing electrode layer allows for routing of all electrical connections including individual electrodes and a ground electrode to appropriate ICs within the same layer using conductive ink or other similar techniques. Stand-alone configurations are described as well as those adapted for communicating with outside control means including a personal computer. Arranging groups of sensors in parallel with each other creates a matrix of sensors while arranging them along a single line creates a linear strip sensor. Using off-the-shelf capacitance-sensing ICs to control a limited number of capacitance sensors allows reducing the number of electrical connections to the sensor array and increasing its reliability.

A device for protecting medical apparatus from contamination by infectious agents comprises a containment body having an inlet destined to be set in fluid communication with an extracorporeal circuit of blood, and an outlet destined to be connected to a fluid line operatively connected to a pressure gauge of a medical apparatus. The inlet is in gas communication with the outlet across an internal cavity of the containment body. Two hydrophobic membranes are predisposed in the containment body between the inlet and the outlet. The membranes each define an anticontamination barrier which is gas-permeable. The device transmits the pressure of the extracorporeal circuit to the pressure gauge, with no relevant loss of head, while at the same time protecting, with a high degree of security, the medical apparatus from risks of contamination by pathogens originating in the extracorporeal circuit.

Flexible shaft wind turbine

A horizontal-axis wind turbine of a rotor-support design is provided in which the structural load of the wind turbine rotor is carried by the wind turbine tower itself. The turbine uses a composite shaft to transfer torque from the wind turbine rotor to the generator, the shaft having high torsional strength but being flexible in bending. This prevents the transmission of bending moments from the rotor hub to the generator system. Accordingly, the components of the turbine can be rigidly mounted to the turbine main frame, removing the need for vibration damping elements. The result is a wind turbine of reduced weight, which can be modeled and designed for improved efficiency and performance. Furthermore, as the turbine components do not have to be load-balanced, the turbine can be of a modular construction for relatively easy servicing and / or upgrading.
