An apparatus and method for displaying the weight or cost of segments of an irregularly shaped item involves passing a sensor bar supported above a supporting surface over the item lying on the surface. A compact hand-held embodiment of the sensor bar enables the operator to move the sensor bar in various linear or non-linear motions over the item surface as the sensor bar moves laterally across the item surface while the sensor bar support posts remain in constant contact with the supporting surface. The sensor bar contains one or more sensors which generate signals corresponding to the height of the item as the sensor bar traverses the item. At the same time, a displacement detector arrangement generates signals corresponding to displacement of the sensor bar relative to the support surface. These signals are processed in a signal processor to determine the volume of an uncut segment of the item lying behind the sensor bar at successive positions. Each of these cumulative volume determinations may be continuously converted into numeric weight values based on the density factor for the particular type of item, whereby numeric weight and cost values (based on weight) are continuously displayed as the sensor bar is stroked over the item, thus enabling the operator to accommodate an on-looking consumer's specific requests as per the particular portion desired based on the physical appearance, weight, and cost of an item before the item is cut.

Device and method for detecting leakage of seal chamber by infrared imaging technology

The invention provides a device for detecting leakage of a seal chamber by infrared imaging technology. The device comprises a gas source, a filter, a pressure regulating valve, an electromagnetic valve, a pressure sensor, a temperature sensor, a thermal infrared imager and a control system, wherein the pressure sensor, the temperature sensor and the thermal infrared imager are connected with the control system through lead wires respectively. A method for detecting the leakage of the seal chamber by the device comprises the following steps that a device to be detected reaches a thermodynamical equilibrium state after inflation, namely heat of a material around a vent released to airflow in unit time is equal to that of the material absorbed from atmosphere around the vent, and a leakage point can be determined through the position with reduced temperature detected by the thermal infrared imager; and the leakage amount can be determined through calculation of a computer in the control system. The device and the method have the advantages that the detecting device has simple structure, easy operation and low cost; the detecting method is practical, has small detection error, and can quickly and accurately detect the leakage point and the leakage amount of a chamber to be detected; and the detecting device and the method have strong applicability and wide application prospect.

The present invention includes a device and associated analytical method to use for the sensitive detection and accurate, rapid determination of acrylamide in food substances. The present invention also relates to the use of a kit device and associated analytical method in which a user can quickly and easily ascertain the amount of acrylamide in food substances with ease and in any location, including a non-laboratory environment. Such detection device and method may be comprised of a sample collection area on which a sample of food, after being mixed in a solution, is placed for example on the substrate of a biochip that includes an enzyme that along with a co-enzyme or form of energy or catalyst, facilitates the conversion of either acrylamide to acrylonitrile or the conversion of acrylamide to ammonia. If acrylamide is detected in the sample food substance, the resultant concentration, as determined on the calorimetric scale, provides the consumer of the food substance an opportunity to reject or discard the substance prior to digestion, thus promoting good health and avoiding potential ingestion of relatively high concentrations of carcinogenic potent acrylamides. Another variation of the detection device above may utilize pH balance meter and system similar to the calorimetric system utilized above, but which allows a numeric or digital reading of the concentration of acrylamides present in the sample of food. Another variation of the detection device may utilize infrared (IR) detection using an IR sensor to measure a sample and quantify the concentration of acrylonitrile within the sample by an absorption peak of the carbon-nitrogen (C≡N) triple bond in acrylonitrile in an IR spectra at 2250 cm−1 wavelength.
