Expandable reaming device

An expanding reamer for reaming or cutting a concave surface, for example, for reaming an acetabulum in preparation for implanting a prosthetic component, such as an acetabular cup or socket, during a hip arthroplasty. The reamer includes a rotating shaft cooperating with a surgical drill or other power source at one end and rotating a reamer head at the other end, and a system adapted to expand one or more blades on the reamer head. In a preferred version, the reamer head comprises a plurality of generally circular, preferably substantially flat and parallel blades, the outer blades of which are radially expandable as segments of a cutting sphere to enlarge the effective diameter of the reamer head. A transverse blade may guide expansion of the blades to move upwards as well as outward to maintain a nearly perfect cutting sphere across a range of diameters. Upon rotation of the reamer head, the blades form a portion of an effective cutting sphere that is preferably greater-than-180-degrees in order to allow greater flexibility in placement of the shaft of the reamer relative to the surface being reamed, for example, relative to the center of axis of the acetabulum.

Anti-rotation tool

A tool is provided for preventing the rotation of a downhole tool or rotary pump stator, the tool comprising a tubular housing and a jaw which is biased radially outwardly from the tool to engage the casing wall for arresting tool rotation and providing significant stabilization of a rotary pump. In doing so, the tool housing moves oppositely to rest against the casing opposite the jaw. The tool housing and the downhole tool are thereby restrained and stabilized by the casing wall. The tool's jaw is released by opposite tool rotation. Preferably, the jaw is biased outwardly from the tool housing to a casing-engaging position by a torsional member, housed along the axis of the hinge of the jaw. The tool is released from the casing by opposite tool rotation which increasingly compresses the jaw toward the housing, twisting the torsional member into torsion, which then acts to urge the jaw outwardly again. Overextension of the jaw during assembly is prevented using cooperating stops in the jaw and the housing.

A non-impact keyless chuck suitable for use with manual or powered drivers is disclosed. The chuck comprises a body which carries a rotatable split nut having a relatively fine thread and a plurality of slidable jaws, which may be identical, driven by the rotatable nut. An anti-friction bearing is disposed between the rotatable nut and a bearing thrust ring mounted on the body. A clutch or torque limiting mechanism is provided to limit the tightening torque to a predetermined value while the loosening torque may be limited or unlimited. The front sleeve, and rear sleeve, if used, may be formed from a structural plastic to reduce manufacturing costs. A relatively soft elastomeric grip boot may be placed on the front sleeve to improve the grip and temporarily restrain and center the tool during chuck tightening or loosening operations.
