Closure system for managing rectal or anal incontinence

A closure system for managing rectal or anal incontinence, having a shaft element, with a distal end and a proximal end and at least one lumen. An inflatable intrarectal balloon includes a flexible, extensible plastic material with a distal end and a proximal end, each of which is attached to the shaft element in a securely bonded and sealed fashion. The intrarectal balloon communicates with the at least one lumen via a perforation in the wall of the shaft element and can be acted on with a filling medium via the lumen. An anchoring element serves as a buttress, which is attached to the shaft element spaced apart from the intrarectal balloon on its proximal side, in the direction toward the proximal end of the shaft element. The distal end of the intrarectal balloon is attached to the shaft element, the balloon being invaginated in the direction toward the proximal end of the balloon in such a way that the intrarectal balloon attached with its two ends to the shaft element, as it is filled with a filling medium, executes a rolling motion from the distal end of the shaft element toward the proximal end of the shaft element.

Facet joint prosthesis

A prosthesis for facet joints of the spinal column includes a bearing piece and a guide rod. The bearing piece includes a pressure plate that is configured for resting on an articular surface of the vertebra and, on the opposite side, a bearing insert which has an articular surface configured for interacting with an articular surface of an adjacent vertebra. The guide rod is secured on the bearing piece by means of a pivot joint. The bearing forces are transmitted to the vertebra via the pressure plate. In this way, the guide rod can have a narrow configuration, such that a slit excavated in the vertebra for receiving the guide rod can also be made narrow to permit a simple and reliable implantation technique which at the same time is gentle on the bone substance.

Two phase anaerobic contact sequencing batch reactor (ACSBR) system for treating wastewater containing simple and complex organic constituents

A two-phase anaerobic treatment system and method for the treatment of wastewaters containing simple and complex organic constituents is provided wherein the complex organic constituents are broken down into simple organic constituents by acidogenic bacteria in a Phase One reactor and the simple organic constituents from the Phase One reactor are converted into biogas, mainly methane, in a Phase Two reactor by methanogenic bacteria. The method includes the steps of feeding wastewater to the Phase One reactor either in an intermittent batch mode or semi-continuous mode, and withdrawing effluent from the Phase One reactor preferably in a batch mode. Effluent from the Phase One reactor is fed to the Phase Two reactor in an intermittent batch mode while effluent from the Phase Two reactor is withdrawn in a batch mode. The method minimizes the transfer of suspended solids from the Phase One reactor to the Phase Two reactor.

Modular waste water treatment system

The modular waste water treatment system receives waste water from a waste water source containing organic waste and produces a treated water effluent. The modular system includes bioreactors and a bioreactor support module. The bioreactors receive a waste water mixture from the bioreactor support module and produce treated water substantially free of organic waste. The bioreactor support module is a transportable unit fabricated upon a frame adapted for transport by a truck upon a public roadway. The bioreactor support module includes items of equipment needed for conditioning waste water for intake by the bioreactors, items of equipment for receiving, processing and discharging treated water from the bioreactors and may include other items of equipment for receiving and processing other byproducts from the bioreactors. The transportable bioreactor support module is sized to support the operation of between one and preferably as many as six bioractors. Accordingly, the modular waste water treatment system can be fabricated off site in a controlled shop environment, transported to a site, placed at a site and even later expanded to include additional bioreactors for increased capacity with a minimum of cost, time and effort.

Novel Chimeric Proteins and Methods for Using The Same

Novel chimeric proteins are disclosed. The proteins comprise at least two portions. The first portion binds to a first cell and decreases the cell's ability to send a trans signal to a second cell; the second portion sends its own trans signal to the second cell. Methods for making and using these proteins in the treatment of cancer, viral infections, autoimmune and alloimmune diseases are also disclosed, as are pharmaceutical formulations comprising the novel chimeric proteins and genes. Either the proteins themselves or a genetic sequence encoding the protein can be administered. Other methods are also disclosed in which two molecular components result in decrement of a first trans signal from a first cell and the conferring of a second trans signal to a second cell.

Femoral Stem for Artificial Hip Joint and Artificial Hip Joint Including the Same

A femoral stem 2 for artificial hip joint is provided that is capable of tightly fixing a greater trochanter and is suitable for treatment of transcervical fracture where it is necessary to fix the greater trochanter. The femoral stem 2 comprising: a stem member 20 including a distal part 21 of the stem member which is inserted in a medullary cavity of a femur and fixed therein and a proximal part 22 of the stem member which has a neck 26 for fixing an artificial head and is positioned at a proximal end of the distal part, the distal part and the proximal part being integrated or separable; a plate fixing portion 36 which is detachably attached at a top of the proximal part; and a greater trochanter plate 3 for depressing the greater trochanter 71, the greater trochanter being fixed to the plate fixing portion 36 at a certain angle or fixed to the plate fixing portion so as to adjust an angle. Since the greater trochanter plate 3 is fixed onto the femoral stem 2 of the present invention, the greater trochanter is tightly fixing and thus the fixation can be stabilized. Furthermore, since the greater trochanter plate 3 is fixed at the top of the proximal part 22, the greater trochanter plate 3 covers the top of the greater trochanter 71 when the greater trochanter 71 is fixed. Therefore upward displacement of the greater trochanter by a gluteus medius musculus can be effectively suppressed.
