Capacitance sensors (or Dielectric sensors) use capacitance to measure the dielectric permittivity of a surrounding medium. The configuration is like the neutron probe where an access tube made of PVC is installed in the soil; probes can also be modular (comb-like) and connected to a logger. The sensing head consists of an oscillator circuit, the frequency is determined by an annular electrode, fringe-effect capacitor, and the dielectric constant of the soil. Each capacitor sensor consists of two metal rings mounted on the circuit board at some distance from the top of the access tube. These rings are a pair of electrodes, which form the plates of the capacitor with the soil acting as the dielectric in between. The plates are connected to an oscillator, consisting of an inductor and a capacitor. The oscillating electrical field is generated between the two rings and extends into the soil medium through the wall of the access tube. The capacitor and the oscillator form a circuit, and changes in dielectric constant of surrounding media are detected by changes in the operating frequency. The capacitance sensors are designed to oscillate in excess of 100 MHz inside the access tube in free air. The output of the sensor is the frequency response of the soil’s capacitance due to its soil moisture level.

A capacitance probe for thin dielectric film characterization provides a highly sensitive capacitance measurement method and reduces the contact area needed to obtain such a measurement. Preferably, the capacitance probe is connected to a measurement system by a transmission line and comprises a center conductive tip and RLC components between the center conductor and the ground of the transmission line. When the probe tip is in contact with a sample, an MIS or MIM structure is formed, with the RLC components and the capacitance of the MIS or MIM structure forming a resonant circuit. By sending a driving signal to the probe and measuring the reflected signal from the probe through the transmission line, the resonant characteristic of the resonant circuit can be obtained. The capacitance of the MIS or MIM structure is obtainable from the resonant characteristics and the dielectric film thickness or other dielectric properties are also extractable.

A probe assembly for capacitive testing electrical connections of a low profile component to a circuit assembly. The probe assembly is configured to reduce coupling of noise signals from the circuit assembly to the capacitive probe. The probe assembly includes a sensing member with a geometry that allows the probe to preferentially couple to test signals from the pins of a component under test rather than conductive structures on the circuit assembly, such as pads, and signal traces to which those pins are attached. The sensing member may be a vertical capacitive sense plate such that coupling is to an edge of the plate. The sensing member alternatively may be a horizontal capacitive sense plate with an active area of the probe surrounded by an isolation ring. Measurements made with such capacitive probes may provide test measurements that yield a reliable discrimination between a properly attached pin and an open pin.

Method of determining a target mesa configuration of an electrostatic chuck

A method of modifying the heat transfer coefficient profile of an electrostatic chuck by configuring the areal density of a mesa configuration of an insulating layer of the chuck is provided. A method of modifying the capacitance profile of an electrostatic chuck by adjustment or initial fabrication of the height of a mesa configuration of an insulating layer of the chuck is further provided. The heat transfer coefficient at a given site can be measured by use of a heat flux probe, whereas the capacitance at a given site can be measured by use of a capacitance probe. The probes are placed on the insulating surface of the chuck and may include a plurality of mesas in a single measurement. A plurality of measurements made across the chuck provide a heat transfer coefficient profile or a capacitance profile, from which a target mesa areal density and a target mesa height are determined. The target density and height are achieved mechanically; the target density by mechanically adjusting the areal density of existing mesas; and the target height by creating or deepening low areas surrounding planned or existing mesas, respectively. This can be accomplished using any of known techniques for controlled material removal such as laser machining or grit blast machining on an X-Y table.

Accurate cryogenic liquid dispenser

A system for dispensing cryogenic liquid to a use device includes a bulk storage tank providing LNG to a sump containing a meter submerged in LNG. A temperature probe is also submerged in the LNG. A dispensing line is positioned between the meter and dispensing hose and includes a dispensing valve. A drain line bypasses the dispensing valve and features a check valve so that LNG trapped in the hose after dispensing is returned to the sump due to pressurization by ambient heat. A capacitance probe is submerged in the LNG in the sump and provides a dielectric that is compared by a microprocessor with the dielectric for pure methane at the same temperature to determine the purity of the LNG. An approximate linear relation between density and dielectric may be used to determine density and mass flow for the LNG from the measured dielectric. Alternatively, a density compensation factor based upon the dielectrics may be calculated and applied to the density of pure methane to obtain the density and mass flow of the LNG. A further alternative embodiment substitutes a compensating meter for the capacitor and the equations for the resulting two meters may be solved to determine density and mass flow for the LNG.
