The present invention relates to the field of medical devices used in the procedures of orotracheal or nasotracheal intubation. Oral or nasal endotracheal intubation procedures are commonly employed to secure a controlled airway and to deliver inhalant oxygen, anesthetic gases, and other therapeutic agents into the trachea and lungs of human and veterinary patients. Such intubation procedures carry a significant risk of dental injury resulting from contact between the laryngoscope blade used for visualization during intubation. The present invention provides an apparatus to reduce dental injury including a modified laryngoscope blade and a disposable insert which is designed to be received and retained in a single step by the modified laryngoscope blade. The disposable insert may be quickly secured by the user, and reduces both direct pressure and shear forces on the maxillary incisor teeth when the laryngoscope blade is placed in a patient's mouth during intubation.

This invention pertains generally to a device for retaining a medically relevant tube into a proper registration for application of medical treatment to a patient, and more particularly to a flexible holder for positioning of an endotracheal tube wherein said holder has integrated therein circumferential guard projections for maintaining optimal flow characteristics of the restrained endotracheal tube. Circumferential guard projections extend both outwardly and inwardly from said endotracheal tube holder and are integral to and monolithically formed with the endotracheal tube holder. The endotracheal tube holder is adaptable to receiving tubes of varying diameters and includes a capture means for allowing insertion and removal of an endotracheal tube through a transverse access port in a side aspect of the holder. The monolithic nature of the endotracheal tube holder design is further enhanced through incorporation of access portals about the holder for allowing routine patient maintenance.

Apparatus and methods facilitating atraumatic intubation

A controllable intubating stylet (CIS) for use by anesthesia and other health care providers is used in conjunction with a video laryngoscope and endotracheal tube in order to achieve intubation of the trachea for general anesthesia as well as other medical conditions. The video laryngoscope is used to visualize the tracheal opening. The CIS is inserted into an endotracheal tube and directed into the trachea. The endotracheal tube then is maneuvered over the stylet and into the trachea, and thereafter, the CIS is removed. The patient can then be oxygenated and ventilated by way of the endotracheal tube. The CIS includes a control mechanism similar to current bronchoscopes which allows for flexion of the tip and overall flexibility of the stylet. In contrast to the bronchoscope, however, the CIS includes no fiberoptics or associated components, such as a light source or eyepiece, making the CIS much less expensive to produce.
