Motion is a perceptual attribute: the visual system infers motion from the changing pattern of light in the retinal image. Often the inference is correct.

Hand-held haptic stylus

Touch screen interfaces suffer from a visual-motor conflict when the user attempt to interact with a virtual object but experiences no physical sensations resulting from that interaction. This can result in uncertainly and decrease performance as well as overall satisfaction with the interface. We introduce a method and device that resolves these issues in stylus-based interfaces for both single and multi-user environments by providing individualized haptic and acoustic feedback. This is achieved by adding a mechanical actuator and acoustic generator to each stylus. These are controlled to respond appropriately to virtual objects and are capable of simulating a variety of physical sensations. Because the feedback is generated by the stylus rather than the screen or touch surface, the current invention can operate at the individual level even in the presence of multiple simultaneous users.

System and method for visual motion based object segmentation and tracking

The PMP Growth algorithm described herein provides for image tracking, segmentation and processing in environments where the camera system moves around a great deal, i.e., causing image jumps from one image frame to the next. It also is operative in systems where the objects themselves are making quick movements that alter their path. Attributes of the PMP Growth algorithm allow tracking systems using the PMP Growth algorithm to follow objects a long distance in a scene. This detection and tracking method is designed to track objects within a sequence of video image frames, and includes detecting keypoints in a current image frame of the video image frames, assigning local appearance features to the detected keypoints, establishing Point-Motion-Pairs between two successive image frames of the video image frames, and accumulating additional matches between image locations to form complete coherent motion object models of the objects being tracked. The segmentation aspect permits for the discovery of different coherently moving regions in the images.

Exercise device independent, variable display rate visual exercise system

InactiveUS20050075213A1Facilitate smooth displayClubsMuscle exercising devicesRepetitive movementsSystem usage
An exercise device independent, variable display rate visual exercise system uses a sensor to sense repetitive movements or other physical functions of the user. A computing device-readable medium containing computing device executable instructions which, when run on a computing device, cause the computing device to receive a user-exercise signal related to a user-exercise level, determine a modified frame-display time for a visual-image stream in response to the user-exercise signal, and provide the modified frame-display time to a visual-image stream player. Determining the modified frame-display time may include instructions that determine a user-exercise level in response to the user-exercise signal, receive a camera-mount speed and a native frame-display time for a recorded visual-image stream, correlate the camera-mount speed and the user-exercise level, and modify the native frame-display time in response to the correlation to produce the modified frame-display time. These instructions permit the visual-image stream player when playing the visual-image stream to dynamically change the frame-display time as a function of the user-exercise level.

Visual motion analysis method for detecting arbitrary numbers of moving objects in image sequences

A visual motion analysis method that uses multiple layered global motion models to both detect and reliably track an arbitrary number of moving objects appearing in image sequences. Each global model includes a background layer and one or more foreground “polybones”, each foreground polybone including a parametric shape model, an appearance model, and a motion model describing an associated moving object. Each polybone includes an exclusive spatial support region and a probabilistic boundary region, and is assigned an explicit depth ordering. Multiple global models having different numbers of layers, depth orderings, motions, etc., corresponding to detected objects are generated, refined using, for example, an EM algorithm, and then ranked / compared. Initial guesses for the model parameters are drawn from a proposal distribution over the set of potential (likely) models. Bayesian model selection is used to compare / rank the different models, and models having relatively high posterior probability are retained for subsequent analysis.
