One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for determining whether software is likely to exhibit malicious behavior by analyzing patterns of system calls made during emulation of the software. The system operates by emulating the software within an insulated environment in a computer system so that the computer system is insulated from malicious actions of the software. During the emulation process, the system records a pattern of system calls directed to an operating system of the computer system. The system compares the pattern of system calls against a database containing suspect patterns of system calls. Based upon this comparison, the system determines whether the software is likely to exhibit malicious behavior. In one embodiment of the present invention, if the software is determined to be likely to exhibit malicious behavior, the system reports this fact to a user of the computer system. In one embodiment of the present invention, the process of comparing the pattern of system calls is performed on-the-fly as the emulation generates system calls.

A method and system for simulating the execution of a software program on a simulated hardware system. An instrumented software program is divided into program segments delineated by tags and is then analyzed for data describing the program segments. The data is tabulated and indexed in a function data table according to the program segments. Hardware parameters that at least define a portion of the simulated hardware system are tabulated in a hardware configuration file. The software program is executed on a host system, and when a tag is executed, data indexed in the function data table under the program segment corresponding to the executed tag and hardware parameters tabulated in the hardware configuration file are used to calculate an estimated execution time for the program segment corresponding to the executed tag. The estimated execution time for the program segment is added to a running total for the overall execution time of the software program. The system includes a memory for storing software parameters describing program segments of the software program, and for storing hardware parameters that at least partially define the simulated hardware system. The system further includes a processor for calculating an estimated execution time for the software program using the software and hardware parameters.

Each CPU that has executed a memory barrier instruction registers completion and sends an indicator to a memory location to indicate completion of the memory barrier instruction. Prior to updating the data, the writing CPU must check the register to ensure completion of the memory barrier execution by each CPU. The register may be in the form of an array, a bitmask, or a combining tree, or a comparable structure. This step ensures that all invalidates are removed from the system and that deadlock between two competing CPUs is avoided. Following validation that each CPU has executed the memory barrier instruction, the writing CPU may update the pointer to the data structure.

A method for predicting localized damage and naturally occurring fractures in a subsurface region is provided. This invention uses a hybrid FEM-DEM (i.e. finite-discrete element) framework combined with a fracture risking analysis and fracture initiation and propagation criteria, to model the transition of rock from a state of continuum to discontinuum. The risking analysis combines results from other natural fracture prediction tools (e.g. displacement discontinuity method, restoration analyses, curvature analysis, analytical solutions, continuum analysis) to augment FEM-DEM solutions, such as by providing remote and local boundary conditions and identifying potential regions of anticipated damage and fracturing. Natural fractures and damage information is extracted from the modeling results and may be used directly for predictions or used as input into other fracture analysis tools or techniques. The FEM-DEM and risking techniques can be incorporated into a variety of numerical simulation software packages that use a finite-discrete method solver.
