An antenna array includes four closely spaced, linearly arranged antenna columns. At least two of the columns, e.g., the center two columns, are dual-polarized. Spacing between neighboring columns is about ½λ, where λ is the free space wavelength at the network carrier frequency. Each column includes a first vertical linear array of radiating elements or groups of elements (sub-arrays) connected to a port. The dual-polarized columns each further include a second linear array of radiating elements oriented at a different polarization than the first array. (For example, horizontal / vertical or slant 45°.) Array ports are connected with four RF feed cables using duplexers in such a way so as to provide two different antenna configurations for forward link and reverse link frequencies, namely, a four-column closely spaced beam-forming array at the forward link and a two-column dual-polarized array at the reverse link for 4-branch diversity reception.

Dual polarized slotted array antenna

A waveguide-implemented antenna comprising a planar array of waveguide slot radiators for communicating electromagnetic signals exhibiting simultaneous dual polarization states. The antenna can consist of parallel ridged waveguides having rectangular or "T"-shaped ridged cross sections. The ridged walls of each parallel ridged waveguide contain a linear array of input slots for receiving (transmitting) electromagnetic signals having a first polarization state from (to) the parallel ridged waveguides and for transmitting (receiving) those signals into (from) a corresponding array of cavity sections. The cavity sections comprise a short section of uniform waveguide with a thickness of much less than a wavelength in the propagation direction. The cavity sections feed to output slots which are rotated relative to the input slots; such that the output slots exhibit a second polarization state, which they radiate (receive) to (from) free space. By interlacing parallel ridged waveguides with alternating +45 degree and -45 degree rotations of the output slots, two independent antennas are formed exhibiting simultaneous dual polarizations. Because the input slots are located in the ridge wall of the parallel ridged waveguides, the parallel ridged waveguides can be fed from their broad wall side. Feeding the parallel ridged waveguides from their broad wall side eliminates a need for a complex feed network.

The present invention relates to a method of generating two beams, having orthogonal polarizations, covering a selected area using an antenna (20) comprising multiple dual-polarized array elements (11). Each dual-polarized array element having a first phase centre (18) associated with a first polarization and a second phase centre (18) associated with a second polarization. The method comprises: designing a first weight matrix having a first non-zero weight vector for the first polarization and a second non-zero weight vector for the second polarization, calculating a second weight matrix based on the weight vectors of the first weight matrix, and applying the first and second weight matrix to the dual-polarized array elements to generate a second beam covering the selected area.

The invention discloses a broadband annular dual-polarization radiation unit and a linear array antenna applying the radiation unit. The radiation unit is used to be installed on a metal reflecting board to form a communication antenna and comprises the following parts: two pairs of orthogonal polarization dipoles used for transmitting or receiving communication signals, and balancers corresponding to the dipoles for performing balanced feeding to each dipole; each dipole comprises two unit arms which are symmetrically and fixedly arranged on the balancer, and show symmetrical lines with the balancers. A dual-polarized antenna (10) with good isolation between feed ports (13a, 13b) and high similarity with respect to the radiation patterns is provided. In addition, a network part (14a, 14b) is laid out so that its corresponding feed structures (12a-12d, 15) are fed with supporting signals of equal magnitude.

Systems and methods which utilize a symmetrical partially coupled microstrip slot feed patch antenna element configuration to provide highly decoupled dual-polarized wideband patch antenna elements are shown. Embodiments provide a microstrip slot feed configuration in which a slot of a first signal feed is centered with respect to the patch and further provide a microstrip slot feed configuration in which slots of a second signal feed are symmetrically disposed with respect to the center of the patch and at positions near the edges of the patch. The microstrip feed utilized in communicating signals with respect to the slots of the second signal feed is adapted to provide signals of substantially equal amplitude and 180° out of phase with respect to each other according to embodiments. The second signal feed configuration utilized according to embodiments provides partial coupling between the patch and the second signal feed.

Provided is a dual polarization antenna realized by using four inverted F-type radiators and a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader employing the dual polarization antenna. The dual polarization antenna includes a ground plate and four inverted F-type radiators set up on the ground plate. The invention advantageously provides a variable phase shifter with very small lateral dimensions which significantly reduces the diameter of a three-sector antenna. The feed network is located on both sides of the antenna ground plane, and the combination of the cable, microstrip and airstrip lines further reduces the lateral size of the antenna.
