Polyp Encapsulation System and Method

An endoscopic electrosurgical instrument is presented for encapsulating and resecting biologic tissue, such as a polyp, from an anatomical structure, such as a lumen. The instrument includes an encapsulation assembly which includes a snare coupled to an electrically non-conductive, shrinkable pouch in a drawstring-like configuration. The encapsulation assembly may be folded within the elongated cylindrical housing of the endoscopic instrument, positioned within the patient at the surgical site, and deployed for use. Once positioned over the polyp, the snare is tightened around the peduncle thereof, and the pouch is activated, thereby shrinking and encapsulating the polyp. The polyp may then be resected using conventional or electrosurgical techniques. The disclosed instrument may include surgical tools and / or electrosurgical electrodes for performing surgical procedures. The disclosed system may reduce the occurrence of undesirable arcing and may aid retrieval of resected tissue.

Transparent thin film transistor (TFT) and its method of manufacture

A transparent thin film transistor (TFT) and a method of fabricating the same are provided. The transparent TFT includes transparent source and drain electrodes formed of transparent material, a transparent semiconductor activation layer that contacts the source and drain electrodes, that is formed of transparent semiconductor, and in which source and drain regions are formed, and a doping section provided between the transparent source and drain electrodes and the transparent activation layer to have the same doping type as that of the source and drain regions and to have doping concentration different from that of the source and drain regions. At this time, doping during the formation of the doping section is performed by an in-situ method in which a gas containing impurities is sprayed in the same apparatus as the apparatus used for the previous step. Therefore, it is possible to reduce high contact resistance generated when the transparent semiconductor activation layer contacts the transparent electrodes and to thus form ohmic contact.

The antenna utilized in the combined electrophysiology and imaging catheter for receiving MR signals is preferably of the coaxial or “loopless” type. High-resolution images from the antenna may be combined with low-resolution images from surface coils of the MR scanner to produce a composite image. A system for eliminating the pickup of RF energy in which intracardiac wires are detuned by filtering so that they become very inefficient antennas. An RF filtering system is provided for suppressing the MR imaging signal while not attenuating the RF ablative current. Steering means may be provided for steering the invasive catheter under MR guidance. Other ablative methods can be used such as laser, ultrasound, and low temperatures.

Membrane desulfurization of liquid hydrocarbons using an extractive liquid membrane contactor system and method

The process of the present invention is directed to the desulfurization of a sulfur-containing hydrocarbon stream with a membrane contactor, where sulfur compounds are concentrated in a sulfur-rich stream on a permeate side of the membrane using an extractive liquid, and a sulfur-lean stream is recovered as a retentate. The sulfur-rich stream, which has a small volume relative to the original hydrocarbon stream, is conveyed to a recovery zone to recover extractive liquid, and the remaining hydrocarbon stream having an increased concentration of sulfur compounds is passed to a downstream desulfurization apparatus or system, such as a hydrotreating system, to recover the hydrocarbons associated with the organosulfur compounds.

Background energy estimation

InactiveUS6157670AEstimate the background energy level accurately and reliablyEliminate energyReceivers monitoringError preventionEngineeringEnergy estimation
A method of estimating background noise in a signal. The signal is divided into blocks of equal predetermined length. The minimum energy of the signal during the length of each block is determined. The minimum energy determined for the current block is compared to a previous determination of minimum energy. If the current minimum energy exceeds a predetermined maximum energy level, the current block minimum energy is discarded and the previous determination remains unchanged. If the current block minimum energy is below the previous determination, the previous estimate is reduced by the difference between the previous determination and current minimum energy. If the current energy is above the previous determination but below the maximum, the previous estimate is increased by half of the difference between the current energy and the previous estimate. The increase factor may also be adjusted to increase the current estimated energy level by a factor of any amount between and including 0 and 1. The estimation of minimum energy, or background energy, therefore decreases in direct proportion to a drop in minimum energy determination but increases only as a partial factor of new determinations.

Wave and tide actuated energy pump

A pumping mechanism that utilizes wave and tidal energy to operate. The mechanism relies on the depth of the fluid or ocean and the length of the pump cylinder to accommodate shifting wave and tide patterns. Alternatively, the mechanism is imbedded or placed in an excavation in the fluid or ocean bed of sufficient depth and width to accommodate the piston cylinder, its' casing and the shifting wave and tide conditions. The invention relies on a buoy or float for the lift of a weighted piston and the weighted piston, when descending, provides the means of creating pressure on the water entrapped in the cylinder, thus causing a pumping action. The pump may be used individually or in concert with other pumps. The pump is intended to move large or small volumes of water at high or low pressures, singularly or in concert with other pumps.

Hydrogen sulfide abatement with scale control and/or well acidizing

The emissions of hydrogen sulfide during the production of natural gas, oil or geothermal fluids from subterranean formations and the subsequent processing of these fluids is reduced by converting the hydrogen sulfide into a hydrogen halide or a halogen acid and then using the hydrogen halide or halogen acid for scale control and / or well acidizing. In a preferred embodiment, hydrogen sulfide produced with geothermal fluids is converted into hydrochloric acid, which is then used to reduce pH and control scale formation during the extraction of energy from geothermal fluids in a geothermal power plant.

Ozone abatement in a re-circulating cooling system

A re-circulating cooling system can be used with a curing system in order to reduce the exhaust requirements for the system. Further, using a cooling fluid such as nitrogen reduces the production of ozone and the sealing requirements for the system. A simple heat exchanger can be used between return and supply reservoirs in order to remove heat added to the re-circulating fluid during circulation past the curing radiation source. The nitrogen can come from a nitrogen source, or from a membrane or other device operable to split feed gas into its molecular components to provide a source of gas rich in nitrogen. An ozone destruction unit can be used with such a cooling system to reduce the amount of ozone to acceptable levels, and to minimize consumption of the nitrogen. A catalyst can be used to deplete the ozone that does not get consumed during the reaction.
