Highly bandwidth-efficient communications

InactiveUS7106781B2Efficient processingEnhance signal to noise and interference ratio of signalSpatial transmit diversityModulated-carrier systemsFrequency spectrumCarrier signal
A discrete multitone stacked-carrier spread spectrum communication method is based on frequency domain spreading including multiplication of a baseband signal by a set of superimposed, or stacked, complex sinusoid carrier waves. In a preferred embodiment, the spreading involves energizing the bins of a large Fast Fourier transform (FFT). This provides a considerable savings in computational complexity for moderate output FFT sizes. Point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-multipoint (nodeless) network topologies are possible. A code-nulling method is included for interference cancellation and enhanced signal separation by exploiting the spectral diversity of the various sources. The basic method may be extended to include multielement antenna array nulling methods for interference cancellation and enhanced signal separation using spatial separation. Such methods permit directive and retrodirective transmission systems that adapt or can be adapted to the radio environment. Such systems are compatible with bandwidth-on-demand and higher-order modulation formats and use advanced adaptation algorithms. In a specific embodiment the spectral and spatial components of the adaptive weights are calculated in a unified operation based on the mathematical analogy between the spectral and spatial descriptions of the airlink.

To accomplish this, an adaptive equalizer includes a feed forward equalizer receiving a signal from a communication channel, the feed forward equalizer equalizing variations in pre-cursor intersymbol interference resulting from changes in characteristics of the channel and providing an output signal to an error correction decoder, a decision circuit, coupled to the feed forward equalizer, for generating error vectors in response to the output signal of the feed forward equalizer and a decision feedback equalizer, coupled to the decision circuit, the decision feedback equalizer monitoring the pre-cursor intersymbol interference of the channel, determining when the transmitter coefficients to the precoder warrant updating, and generating a signal indicating that an update to the transmitter coefficients to the precoder is warranted. The adaptive equalizer farther includes a comparison circuit, the comparison circuit receiving an output from the decision feedback equalizer and comparing the output from the decision feedback equalizer to a reference, the comparison circuit generating the signal indicating that an update to the transmitter coefficients to the precoder is warranted in response to the comparison.

Spread spectrum communication method and system using diversity correlation and multi-user detection

A communication system transmits and receives a plurality of spread-spectrum signals having differences in at least one diversity parameter. The signals are highly correlated when their diversity parameters are similar, and the signals are uncorrelated when at least one diversity parameter is different. Any combination of a transmitter, a receiver, and a communication channel may diversity-encode the signals to effect differences in their diversity parameters. A receiver diversity-decoder compensates for differences in a diversity-parameter of at least one received signal to make the signal highly correlated with at least one other received signal. A correlator combines at least two of the received signals to recover an embedded information signal. The communication system enables the use of true-noise signals for spreading information signals, provides simplified receiver designs, and enables antenna arrays to spatially process spread-spectrum signals.

Methods and systems for error detection and correction using vector signal prediction

ActiveUS9083576B1Eliminate inter-symbol interferenceDelay in completionNear-field transmissionLine-faulsts/interference reductionSymbol decodingCommunications system
Decision Feedback Equalization techniques are difficult to apply in high speed communications systems, as the decoding process for a received symbol may not be completed in time to allow adaptive detection of the following symbol. Advantage may be taken of certain novel aspects of vector signaling codes to provide decision feedback to an adaptive data receiver concurrent with symbol decoding, rather than being delayed to symbol decode completion. Methods and systems are described that error correct an initial non-adaptive decoding, based on differences between the actual received signals and simulated received signals derived from the initial decoding and historical received data. Additional methods and systems are described using bounding functions to estimate an error rate with reduced computation.
