Computational pathology systems and methods for early-stage cancer prognosis

ActiveUS20170270666A1Reduce computing costInformed choiceImage enhancementImage analysisComputational pathologyLow risk group
The subject disclosure presents systems and computer-implemented methods for providing reliable risk stratification for early-stage cancer patients by predicting a recurrence risk of the patient and to categorize the patient into a high or low risk group. A series of slides depicting serial sections of cancerous tissue are automatically analyzed by a digital pathology system, a score for the sections is calculated, and a Cox proportional hazards regression model is used to stratify the patient into a low or high risk group. The Cox proportional hazards regression model may be used to determine a whole-slide scoring algorithm based on training data comprising survival data for a plurality of patients and their respective tissue sections. The coefficients may differ based on different types of image analysis operations applied to either whole-tumor regions or specified regions within a slide.

Variable spacing pulse position modulation for ultra-wideband communication links

Methods and systems for generating a variable spacing pulse position modulated (VSPPM) signal for transmission across an ultra-wideband communications channel. The variable pulse position modulated spread spectrum signal is created by encoding every M input data bits from an input data stream into a symbol consisting of Nc chips. Each chip is divided into 2M sub-chips and each sub-chip is further divided into Np time slots. A pulse is transmitted for each chip in the symbol. During each chip period, the pulse is placed in the sub-chip corresponding to the binary M-tuple (or symbol) value. A time hopping code sequence consisting of Nc elements with a one-to-one chip association is then applied to each symbol so that the position of each pulse is shifted to the appropriate time slot that corresponds to the time hopping code value.

Floating combine sieve assembly

A sieve assembly for separating grain from chaff inside of a combine. The sieve assembly comprises a plurality of longitudinal sieve planks that pivot on their longitudinal axis. A hanging weighted member combined with the sieve planks regulates the angle of the sieve planks relative to the combine. As the combine becomes laterally inclined on a hillside, the weighted member changes its angular position relative to the combine. In doing so, the weighted member causes the sieve planks to pivot on their longitudinal axis so that the sieve planks remain level relative to the horizon. Dividers extend between each sieve plank.

A method and apparatus system for calibrating a sound beam-forming system provides calibration of low cost alternatives to present array beam-forming systems. A test signal is supplied to multiple speaker drivers and is detected from a microphone signal supplied from a microphone positioned at a listening position. A signal relationship between surround channel information supplied to the multiple speaker drivers is adjusted in conformity with the detected signal so that the surround channel information is substantially attenuated along a direct path toward the listening position. The result is that the surround channel information is propagated in a directivity pattern having at least one primary lobe directed away from the listening position so that the surround channel information is diffused by reflection before reaching the listening position. The signal relationship may be controlled by multiple digital filters that maximize late vs. early response of the surround channel information.

Bridging apparatus for interconnecting a wireless PAN and a wireless LAN

A Wireless bridge conjoins two previously incompatible technologies within a single device to leverage the strengths of each. The Wireless bridge marries the Personal Area Network (PAN) technology of Bluetooth as described in Bluetooth Specification Version 1.0B with the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technology described in the IEEE802.11a specification to provide a wireless system level solution for peripheral devices to provide Internet service interactions. The invention brings together in a single working device implementations of these technologies so they do not interfere or disrupt the operation of each other and instead provide a seamless transition of a Bluetooth connection to Wireless Local Area Network / Internet connection. From the Wireless Local Area Network perspective the inventive wireless bridge extension allows a Bluetooth-enabled device to roam from one Wireless Access Point (bridge) to the next without losing its back end connection. The invention takes into account the minimum separation and shielding required of these potentially conflicting technologies to inter-operate.

Method for selective separation of free-astaxanthin from green algae haematococcus pluvialis

There is provided a method of separating free-astaxanthin selectively from green algae and, more particularly, to a method of separating free-astaxanthin selectively from Haematococcus pluvialis, the method comprising: mixing a cell culture containing Haematococcus pluvialis with an alkanic solvent and stirring, thereby obtaining an alkanic solvent extract containing astaxanthin material including free-astaxanthin and astaxanthin ester (step 1); and mixing the alkanic solvent extract with an alcohol and stirring, thereby obtaining an alcoholic extract containing free-astaxanthin (step 2). The present invention can not only maximize the efficiency of separating astaxanthin in high concentration by providing a very simple process technique capable of recovering free-astaxanthin selectively from H. pluvialis culture with high efficiency, but also realize the economical and simple operation of the process of separating free-astaxanthin by repeatedly using an alkanic solvent as a mediating solvent for extracting free-astaxanthin. Such a separation method can be used in extracting and separating a carotinoid analogue containing astaxanthin from a useful microalgae culture in addition to Haematococcus species.

High defiberization chip pretreatment

A chip pretreatment process which comprises conveying the feed material through a compression screw device having an atmosphere of saturated steam at a pressure above about 5 psig, decompressing and discharging the compressed material from the screw device into a decompression region, feeding the decompressed material from the decompression region into a fiberizing device, such as a low intensity disc refiner, where at least about 30 percent of the fiber bundles and fibers are axially separated, without substantial fibrillation of the fibers. In a more specific form the invention is directed to a process for producing mechanical pulp, including the steps of fiberizing wood chip feed material in a low intensity disc refiner until at least about 30 percent of the fibers are axially separated with less than about 5 percent fibrillation, and subsequently refining the fiberized material in a high intensity disc refiner until at least about 90 percent of the fibers are fibrillated. In another form the invention combines chip fiberizing with chemical treatments, for improving the pulp property versus energy relationships.

Medical Catheter Having a Design Providing Low Recirculation and Reversibility

The present disclosure relates to a medical catheter including an elongate catheter member defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal end, a distal end, an outer wall, and first and second internal lumens. The outer wall of the catheter member includes a first opening in fluid communication with the first internal lumen to facilitate the establishment of a first flow stream, and a second opening in fluid communication with the second internal lumen to facilitate the establishment of a second flow stream. Each of the first and second openings includes proximal and distal tapered portions that are connected by an intermediate portion having a constant transverse dimension. The configurations, dimensions, and positioning of the first and second openings optimizes separation of the first flow stream from the second flow stream in order to reduce the likelihood of recirculation between the first and second internal lumens.

Calibration of geophone and hydrophone pairs

A system to improve calibration of geophone and hydrophone pairs is described. The system generates first and second phase shifted data by applying a first and second phase shift to first seismic data acquired by the geophone. The system generates a first upgoing wavefield by summing the first phase shifted data and second seismic data acquired by the hydrophone, and a second upgoing wavefield by summing the second phase shifted data and the second seismic data. The system generates a first downgoing wavefield from a difference of the first phase shifted data and the second seismic data, and a second downgoing wavefield from a difference of the second phase shifted data and the second seismic data. The system determines ratios of the upgoing wavefields and the downgoing wavefields for each phase shift to identify the highest ratio, and selects the phase shift corresponding to the highest ratio for calibration.
