A voltage between both terminals of each unit battery is amplified by a differential amplifier and is then converted by a converter into a predetermined physical quantity that corresponds to the voltage between both terminals of the unit battery. Embodiments are adapted to accommodate different instrument configurations. Position information may be utilized in combination with an ultrasound image to display a visual representation of the instrument, or portion thereof, within a object being imaged.
