Modular, high energy, widely-tunable ultrafast fiber source

A modular, compact and widely tunable laser system for the efficient generation of high peak and high average power ultrashort pulses. Modularity is ensured by the implementation of interchangeable amplifier components. System compactness is ensured by employing efficient fiber amplifiers, directly or indirectly pumped by diode lasers. Peak power handling capability of the fiber amplifiers is expanded by using optimized pulse shapes, as well as dispersively broadened pulses. After amplification, the dispersively stretched pulses can be re-compressed to nearly their bandwidth limit by the implementation of another set of dispersive delay lines. To ensure a wide tunability of the whole system, Raman-shifting of the compact sources of the ultrashort pulses in conjunction with frequency-conversion in nonlinear optical crystals can be implemented, or an Anti-Stokes fiber in conjunction with fiber amplifiers and Raman-shifters are used.

Dispersive broadening is introduced by dispersive pulse stretching in the presence of self-phase modulation and gain, resulting in the formation of high-power parabolic pulses. In addition, dispersive broadening is also introduced by simple fiber delay lines or chirped fiber gratings, resulting in a further increase of the energy handling ability of the fiber amplifiers. The phase of the pulses in the dispersive delay line is controlled to quartic order by the use of fibers with varying amounts of waveguide dispersion or by controlling the chirp of the fiber gratings. After amplification, the dispersively stretched pulses can be re-compressed to nearly their bandwidth limit by the implementation of another set of dispersive delay lines. To ensure a wide tunability of the whole system, Raman-shifting of the compact sources of ultrashort pulses in conjunction with frequency-conversion in nonlinear optical crystals can be implemented, or an Anti-Stokes fiber in conjunction with fiber amplifiers and Raman-shifters are used. A particularly compact implementation of the whole system uses fiber oscillators in conjunction with fiber amplifiers. Additionally, long, distributed, positive dispersion optical amplifiers are used to improve transmission characteristics of an optical communication system. Finally, an optical communication system utilizes a Raman amplifier fiber pumped by a train of Raman-shifted, wavelength-tunable pump pulses, to thereby amplify an optical signal which counterpropogates within the Raman amplifier fiber with respect to the pump pulses.

Nutritional compostions comprising a soluble viscous fiber in a solid crisp matrix

Disclosed are nutritional compositions having a solid crisp matrix, or a flour derived from the solid crisp matrix, said matrix comprising (A) from about 10% to about 50% by weight of a soluble viscous fiber, preferably guar; (B) from about 10% to about 99% by weight of a carbohydrate other than and in addition to the soluble viscous fiber; and (C) from about 1% to about 49% by weight of protein, wherein the matrix has a bulk density of less than about 0.4 g / cc. It has been found that soluble viscous fiber sources such as guar gum can be formulated into a solid crisp matrix, which then minimizes several limitations commonly associated with the formulation of such fiber sources into a conventional nutrition bar, e.g. slimy mouthfeel, tooth packing. These compositions are especially effective when formulated with gelled inclusions, including those containing or associated with acidulants, sour flavorants, or both. The nutritional compositions are especially useful as satiety agents, weight reduction agents, and / or for blunting the postprandial glycemic response in diabetics or other individuals in whom such a response would be beneficial.

The utility model discloses a method for testing the frequency properties of the photoelectric detector used for fiber optic gyroscopes. A signal generator produces sinusoidal signals and adds the signal to a light intensity modulator to carry out sinusoidal modulation on the optical power of the optical signal from the fiber source in order to produce an optical signal with sinusoidal components. The measured photodetector converts the modulated optical signal into an electrical signal and samples the electric signal by means of high-speed data acquisition card, then conducts narrowband filter and signal processing over the collected samples and calculates the corresponding frequency response. The frequency sequence pre-selected by a numerical control system changes the frequency at which the sine wave generator (NC) system sends out signals , tests a series of frequency point responses, which can be combined into an amplitude frequency response curve of the measured photodetector, and the curve is transmitted to the terminal computer for displaying and storage. By controlling all the test processes by numerical control system, the utility model has the advantages of automatic measurement, fast testing speed, high testing precision, and therefore is suitable for carefully weighing the photodetector frequency performance in the whole operating frequency range.
