The present invention relates to processes utilizing ionic liquids for the dissolution of various polymers and/or copolymers, the formation of resins and blends, and the reconstitution of polymer and/or copolymer solutions, and the dissolution and blending of “functional additives” and/or various polymers and/or copolymers to form advanced composite materials.

Compositions, methods, and systems for manufacturing articles, particularly containers and packaging materials, having a highly inorganically filled matrix. Suitable inorganically filled mixtures are prepared by mixing together an organic polymer binder, water, one or more aggregate materials, fibers, and optional admixtures in the correct proportions in order to form an article which has the desired performance criteria. The inorganically filled mixtures are molded to fashion a portion of the mixture into a form stable shape for the desired article. Once the article has obtained form stability, such as by heating to remove water by evaporation, the article is removed from the mold and allowed to harden to gain strength. The articles may have properties substantially similar to articles presently made from traditional materials like paper, paperboard, polystyrene, plastic, or metal. They have especial utility in the mass production of containers, particularly food and beverage containers.

Compositions and methods in which dry-committed fibers are substantially homogeneously dispersed throughout a fibrous composition. The fibrous composition is characterized as having sufficient yield stress and viscosity such that the shearing forces from the mixing apparatus are effectively transferred down to the fiber level. This is accomplished by means of an appropriate thickening agent, e.g, gelatinized starch. The dry-committed fibers are exemplified by flash dry fibers or fibrous sheets that have been cut or torn into fragments less than 2 cm across. Providing fibers that have been dry-committed greatly reduces the time that it takes to obtain substantially homogeneous dispersion of the fibers throughout the fibrous composition. This, in turn, reduces the risk of mixture spoilage and mechanical or chemical damage to the solid components within the fibrous composition.

A composition, comprising (a) microcrystalline cellulose; and (b) a compressibility augmenting agent which (i) physically restricts the proximity of the interface between adjacent cellulose surfaces; or (ii) inhibits interactions between adjacent cellulose surfaces; or (iii) accomplishes both (i) and (ii) above, is disclosed. The composition is in the form of agglomerated particles of microcrystalline cellulose and the compressibility augmenting agent in intimate association with each other.

The present invention provides an improved method and materials for forming biodegradable containers that can hold food products in dry, damp or wet conditions and provides the biodegradable containers prepared according to the disclosed process. The containers are produced through the use of a pre-gelled starch suspension that is unique in its ability to form hydrated gels and to maintain this gel structure in the presence of many other types of materials and at low temperatures.

This invention relates to a process of forming a nanocomposite of cellulose with a clay material that is used as the nanofiller material. The nanocomposites show significant improvements in thermal properties when compared to unbleached cotton and cotton processed under conditions for nanocomposite preparation. The degradation temperature of these nanocomposites is significantly increased over that of unbleached cotton.

A first variant of an adhesive composition for making a lignocellulosic composite includes soy protein and/or lignin; at least one substantially formaldehyde-free curing agent that includes at least one amine, amide, imine, imide, or nitrogen-containing heterocyclic functional group that can react with at least one functional group of the soy protein; and at least one compound selected from a boron compound, a group IA oxide or hydroxide, or a group IIA oxide or hydroxide. A second variant of an adhesive composition includes a first component selected from soy protein and/or lignin; and at least one substantially formaldehyde-free curing agent selected from a reaction product of epichlorohydrin with ethylenediamine, a reaction product of epichlorohydrin with bis-hexamethylenetriamine, or a reaction product of epichlorohydrin with hexamethylenediamine.

The present invention relates to a coated fiber based substrate comprising a dispersion coating wherein said dispersion coating comprises microfibrillated cellulose and colloidal particles of a polymer. The invention further relates to a package formed from said substrate, a dispersion coating and process for the production of mentioned substrate.

An adhesive composition that can be used in particleboards and other composites is formed from an aqueous mixture of soy protein, zinc sulfate heptahydrate, calcium oxide, sodium benzoate, pine oil, wax emulsion and non-sulfonated kraft lignin. In a second embodiment the composition further includes an acid.

An emulsion comprising water as the continuous phase, a wax as the discontinuous phase, an emulsifier and a preservative having the general structure:

The preservative may be added to the emulsion after the emulsion is formed. The emulsion can be incorporated into a gypsum product such as gypsum board or gypsum wood fiber board. The gypsum product may be made by forming a slurry containing gypsum, water, and the emulsion into a solid product. A method for improving the water resistance of a lignocellulosic composite product prepared by mixing lignocellulosic material with a binder to form a mixture and solidifying the mixture in a selected configuration to form the composite product may include adding to the mixture an emulsion as described above.

The present invention provides wood adhesive binder compositions comprising a naturally occurring protein component, e.g. soy flour, and an oxazoline-functional group containing polymer or resin component, the two components in a solids weight ratio of from 60:40 to 98:2. As formulated, the compositions may comprise from 40 to 98 wt. % of the naturally occurring protein component, preferably, 50 wt. % or more. Preferably, the wood adhesive binder further comprises lignins or lignosulfonate. Where the wood adhesive binder compositions comprise lignins or lignosulfonates, they remain more fluid and workable at a higher pH such as, for example, 4.5 or more. Any of the compositions may be formulated with one or more in situ acid generator compound to insure more rapid cure on heating or pressing. The binder enables the provision of mechanically sound, low cost and biodegradable composites, such as, medium density fiberboard (MDF).

Emulsions are provided which are useful in imparting water-resistance to lignocellulosic products. In one embodiment, the emulsions contain a nonsaponifiable wax, a saponified wax, an alkyl phenol component, a dispersant/surfactant such as a salt of polynaphthalenesulfonic acid, and a carboxymethylcellulose. Such emulsions may be added to hot, even boiling, water without the emulsion separating or curdling. Various embodiments are stable for extended periods of time when stored at room temperature, do not require the addition of a preservative biocide to avoid contributing to biodegradation in a lignocellulosic product. The emulsions are pourable liquids at room temperature. Optionally, the emulsions may be added to lignocellulosic products with a preservative to inhibit the preservative from leaching out.

The invention provides protein adhesives containing certain additives and methods of making and using such adhesives. The protein adhesives contain ground plant meal or an isolated polypeptide composition obtained from plant biomass in combination with certain additives, such as an exfoliated clay or partially exfoliated clay.

Aspects of the invention generally provide structures for rolling paper structures for an end user to create a cigar or cigarette. In one aspect, a rolling paper structure is provided including a first paper section having a first height, a second paper section coupled to the first paper section and the second paper section having a second height longer than the first height, and an optional adhesive disposed on the second paper section. The rolling paper structure may be folded between the first paper section and the second paper section having a portion extending beyond the first paper section. An adhesive comprising a hemp additive for rolling paper structures is also provided.

A biodegradable starch film is provided. The biodegradable starch film includes a starch which is cross-linked by means of a cross-linking agent. The cross-linking agent comprises glycidyl methacrylate 2,3-epoxypropyl methacrylate (GMA), octenyl succinyl anhydride (OSA), or dodecyl succinic anhydride (DDSA) or combinations thereof. The cross-linking agent is 1 to 10 weight parts based on the starch of 100 weight parts. Furthermore, a method for manufacturing starch foam is also provided.

The addition of small quantities of at least one additive to calcium sulfate prior to addition of the calcium sulfate to the cellulose fiber solution for paper manufacture has been found to significantly increase its opacifying capacity. Suitable additives for this invention include: kaolin, calcium carbonate, talc, titanium dioxide, aluminum silicate, calcium silicate, other silicates and/or their mixtures.

The invention provides protein adhesives, and methods of making and using such adhesives. The protein adhesives contain a protein-bonding agent and plant protein composition, such as an isolated water-soluble protein fraction or ground plant meal obtained from plant biomass. The protein-bonding agent can be an anhydride compound, carboxylic acid compound, carboxylate salt compound, or combinations thereof. A non-synthetic biodegradable starch-based composition is described comprising starch, plasticizer, reinforcing filler, binder, in the presence or absence of alkali or salt, and water. The starch-based composition is subjected to transformation process to produce various foam-liked products, having closed cell structure with dense skin layer. These products are particularly suitable for use as disposal or single-used food packages or containers. These products are to substitute the shape bodies currently used made of plastic or plastic foam. A transformation process of the non-synthetic biodegradable starch-based composition into various foam-liked products is also described. The process is either injecting or compressing the starch-based composition and forming a desired shape in a closed mould at a temperature ranging from 150 to 300 degree Celcius until the gelatinization of starch has been accomplished.
