The compositions generally include a protein portion and modifying ingredient portion selected from the group consisting of carboxyl-containing compounds, aldehyde-containing compounds, epoxy group-containing compounds, and mixtures thereof. The composition is preferably prepared at a pH level at or near the isoelectric point of the protein. In other preferred forms, the adhesive composition includes a protein portion and a carboxyl-containing group portion.

Stable Acid Denatured Soy/Urea Adhesives and Methods of Making Same

The present invention provides an improved method of producing a stable acid denatured soy / urea adhesive having improved wet and dry strengths, with more efficient production and lower production costs. The method comprises combining urea with soy flour that has been acid treated until denatured and substantially free from urease activity. The soy flour is preferably lowered to a pH of 2.0 to 4.0 for at least 1 minute. Optionally, the method may also include adding a crosslinking agent, diluent or both to the soy flour / urea adhesive and / or adding an emulsified or dispersed polymer. Adhesives and dispersions prepared according to the methods of this invention offer increased stability and strength properties.

The low-temperature hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive has appropriate melt viscosity, good initial bonding performance, persistent bonding performance, operative weldability, heat resistance and the like within the using temperature range from 120 DEG C to 130 DEG C, carbonization is effectively reduced, the equipment failure rate is lowered, the production efficiency is improved, ageing and decomposition of the tackifying resin and the other constituents are reduced, and the environment pollution is reduced. An adhesive product and method of making the product replaces asphalt in the manufacture of roofing shingles. The method comprises steps of forming a mixture of oil comprising fatty acids and a powdered catalyst operable to catalyze the polymerization of the oil; maintaining the oil to powdered catalyst weight ratio in the mixture between 1 to 0.01 and 1 to 4.9; heating the mixture to a reaction temperature greater than 100 degrees Centigrade; maintaining the reaction temperature for at least five minutes; and, injecting air into the mixture while maintaining the reaction temperature. In making a roofing shingle, the method includes additional steps of: applying the heated mixture to a fiberglass mat sheet from an upstream roll to form a tacky coated strip; and, adding a layer of granules to the tacky coated strip. The adhesive material of this method comprises polymerized oil and the powdered catalyst.
