These motions are optimized with respect to functional information gained about the body structure, by identifying preferred sets of views for measurements, based on models of the body structures and information theoretic measures. A second iteration, for identifying preferred sets of views for measurements of a portion of a body structure, based on models of a location of a pathology that has been identified, makes it possible, in effect, to zoom in on a suspected pathology. The systems are preprogrammed to provide these motions automatically.

Spectral optical imaging at one or more key water absorption fingerprint wavelengths measures the difference in water content between a region of cancerous or precancerous tissue and a region of normal tissue. Water content is an important diagnostic parameter because cancerous and precanerous tissues have different water content than normal tissues. Key water absorption wavelengths include at least one of 980 nanometers (nm), 1195 nm, 1456 nm, 1944 nm, 2880 nm to 3360 nm, and 4720 nm. In the range of 400 nm to 6000 nm, one or more points of negligible water absorption are used as reference points for a comparison with one or more key neighboring water absorption wavelengths. Different images are generated using at least two wavelengths, including a water absorption wavelength and a negligible water absorption wavelength, to yield diagnostic information relevant for classifying a tissue region as cancerous, precancerous, or normal. The results of this comparison can be used to identify regions of cancerous tissue in organs such as the breast, cervix and prostate.

The input processor may be further constructed to extract pixel data from the spectral signals where the pixel data is indicative of cervical tissue classification. The input processor may be further configured to compress the extracted pixel data. A classifier is provided to assign a tissue classification to the pixel data. A two dimensional image of the cervix is generated by an image processor from the compressed data, the two dimensional image including color-coded regions representing specific tissue classifications of the cervix.

The present invention is directed to a system and method for measuring the dilatation and effacement of the uterine cervix in a manner that is non-invasive to the cervix. The system having a probe and a monitoring unit serve to measure the cervix dimensions during routine clinical visits and is also suitable for personal checkup at home. The probe primarily includes a camera for imaging the cervix and a set of circles of different diameters imprinted on the imaging window of the probe. The probe is inserted into the vagina until its imaging window abuts the cervix. The system captures and displays images of the cervix opening superimposed with the set of concentric circles, which allows the user to perform a visual comparison and determine the diameter of the opening. The probe may also include an ultrasonic transducer operating in pulse-echo mode to measure the thickness of the cervix and determine its effacement.
