Braze system and method for reducing strain in a braze joint

A system for joining a pair of structural members having widely differing coefficients of thermal expansion is disclosed. A mechanically "thick" foil is made by dispersing a refractory metal powder, such as molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, or tungsten into a quantity of a liquid, high expansion metal such as copper, silver, or gold, casting an ingot of the mixture, and then cutting sections of the ingot about 1 mm thick to provide the foil member. These foil members are shaped, and assembled between surfaces of structural members for joining, together with a layer of a braze alloy on either side of the foil member capable of wetting both the surfaces of the structural members and the foil. The assembled body is then heated to melt the braze alloy and join the assembled structure. The foil member subsequently absorbs the mechanical strain generated by the differential contraction of the cooling members that results from the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion of the members.

Method of forming metal foams by cold spray technique

The present invention relates to a method of forming metallic foams using cold spray processing. The method allows for the formation of metallic foams on existing substrates as a layer. The method includes the steps of providing a substrate for coating of a metallic foam; cold spraying a mixture of metal particles and a foaming agent onto the substrate to form a substrate coated with an unexpanded metallic layer; foam heat treating the substrate coated with an unexpanded metallic layer at a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the foaming agent for a time sufficient to form a heated substrate coated with an expanded metal foam layer; and cooling the heated substrate coated with an expanded metal foam layer to about ambient temperature to form a cooled substrate coated with an expanded metal foam layer. The method of forming metallic foams on substrates finds application in the oil, gas, and chemical industry by being an integral part of casings, pipelines, transfer lines, and other flow lines.

The first or frame section of the present loading ramp installs onto the existing tailgate slip hinges in place of the tailgate without tools or modification of the vehicle. Upper and lower ramp sections are pivotally connected to each other and to the frame section in a similar manner. An arm carried by the first frame section pivots down onto the vehicle's hitch for additional support for the ramp; two legs pivot down from the upper ramp to engage the ground provide further support. The surface of ramp is covered with expanded metal or metal mesh to provide traction in the loading configuration and rearward visibility for the drive in the loaded configuration, with reinforcing added where the load will engage the ramp surface.

Inflator

An inflator for a vehicle occupant restraint system. The inflator includes a cylindrical outer wall having a longitudinal axis and a first opening formed therealong for enabling fluid communication between an interior of the inflator and an exterior of the inflator. A first inflation fluid source is positioned within the outer wall. A baffle system is fluidly interposed between the first inflation fluid source and the outer wall for conveying inflation fluid between the first inflation fluid source and the outer wall, and for cooling the inflation fluid. A second opening enables fluid communication between the first inflation fluid source and the baffle system, and a third opening enables fluid communication between the baffle system and the outer wall. The first opening is substantially radially aligned with the second opening. An expanded metal mesh buffer may be positioned between within the baffle system. Openings enabling fluid communication between the baffle system and the exterior of the baffle system, any openings provided within the baffle system, and the opening enabling fluid communication between the interior and exterior of the inflator housing are cooperatively positioned to direct the flow of an inflation through the baffle system in directions substantially perpendicular to and / or substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis. Also disclosed is a vehicle occupant restraint system incorporating an inflator in accordance with the present invention.

Filter system for catch basins

A first filter basket (20) sits down into a catch basin (10) and has an upper flange (24) that rests on a shoulder (14) provided in the catch basin (10) for supporting a grate (16). The filter basket (20) has expanded metal side and bottom walls which are adapted to pass liquid and catch particulate material larger in size than the wall openings. A smaller second filter basket (72) is optionally supported inside the larger first filter basket (20). A low CTE metal-ceramic composite material featuring carbon fibers reinforcing a matrix featuring silicon metal or silicon alloy. The fibers have a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in the axial direction, and preferably negative. The principles of making Si / SiC composites can be adapted to produce the instant Si matrix composites. The CTE of the composite body depends not only upon the relative CTE's of the fibers and matrix, and their relative amounts (e.g., loadings), but also upon the relative elastic moduli of the fibers and matrix. Thus, Si / SiC matrices produced by a reaction-bonding process inherently possess low CTE, but the instant inventors prefer to make such composites having relatively large fractions of unreacted silicon, thereby driving composite CTE lower still. Here, the carbon fibers are protected from reaction with the silicon infiltrant with one or more materials disposed between the fibers and the infiltrant. Providing at least a degree of toughness or impact resistance can also be realized in these composites. Laminates produce Isotropic or quasi-isotropic properties in the composite body can be realized by, for example, providing the fibers in the form of cross-plied laminates featuring the fibers in parallel or woven arrays.

A gutter cover is formed through expanded metal manufacturing techniques to create alternating areas of solid metal and diamond-shaped openings to facilitate the shedding of leaves while passing water into the gutter.
