The process for melanin production comprises: an oxidation reaction step in which a melanin precursor is continuously oxidized with an oxidizing agent in an aqueous alkali solution while the molar ratio of the melanin precursor to the oxidizing agent is kept constant; and a precipitation step in which the liquid reaction mixture after the oxidation step is acidified to precipitate a melanin. The process for producing the melanin-containing functional film comprises: a step in which a film is treated with an aqueous alkali solution containing at least the melanin; and a step in which the film treated with the aqueous alkali solution is treated with an aqueous solution containing an inorganic salt.
