A method is disclosed for determining repeatable runout (RRO) cancellation values in a disk drive having a head disk assembly (HDA) and a sampled servo controller. The HDA includes a disk having distributed position information in servo wedges, a rotary actuator carrying a head that periodically reads the position information, and a voice coil motor circuit that responds to a control effort signal. The servo controller periodically adjusts the control effort signal during a track-following operation. In the method, the position information related to a predetermined track is read during track following for more than one disk rotation. The position information is averaged for each servo wedge obtained during the disk rotations. The averaged servo position values are filtered with a filter for compensating effects of the sampled servo controller, which tend to distort the averaged servo position values, to generate the RRO cancellation values for the predetermined track.

A method and system to calibrate a motor circuit protection device is disclosed. An example method calibrates a signal chain of a circuit breaker. The signal chain includes a current transformer, a burden resistor, a stored energy circuit and a controller. The circuit breaker includes a memory coupled to the controller. A calibration instruction routine is written in a first location of the memory. A test current is injected in the circuit breaker signal chain. The test current peak of the test current in the circuit breaker signal chain is measured. Data indicative of the test current peak is stored in a second location of the memory. The test current peak data is read from the second location of the memory. The test current peak data is compared with nominal current data related to the signal chain remotely from the circuit breaker. A calibration factor is determined based on the comparison.

Method and apparatus providing final test and trimming for a power supply controller

A power supply controller having final test and trim circuitry. In one embodiment, a power supply controller for switched mode power supply includes a selector circuit, a trim circuit, a shutdown circuit and a disable circuit. The trim circuit includes a programmable circuit connection that can be selected by the selector circuit by toggling a voltage on an external terminal such as for example a power supply terminal, a control terminal or a function terminal of the power supply controller. The programmable circuit connection in the trim circuit can be programmed by applying a programming voltage to the external terminal. The shutdown circuit shuts down the power supply controller if the temperature rises above an over temperature threshold voltage. The shutdown circuit includes adjustment circuitry that can be used to test the shutdown circuit. The adjustment circuitry can adjust and reduce the over temperature threshold of the power supply controller. Thus, the power supply controller can be tested without having to actually heat the part. The disable circuit includes a programmable circuit connection, which when programmed prevents further trimming of power supply controller and prevents adjustment of the shutdown circuit over temperature threshold.

Method and system for time synchronized trip algorithms for breaker self protection

A time-synchronized trip implementation for a motor circuit protector (MCP) having a reconfigurable microcontroller. The microcontroller causes a power supply to, be charged for an initial time period during a charging mode. An onboard comparator is configured for a predetermined self-protection level of the MCP, and fault currents that exceed the comparator's threshold will directly drive a solenoid to trip the MCP. The microcontroller reconfigures the comparator's threshold to both measure and charge the power supply toward a stored energy trip voltage, which will charge quickly when high fault currents are present. As a result, self-protection is not compromised. After the trip voltage is reached, the microcontroller reconfigures the onboard comparator's threshold for self-protection trip levels. When a trip event occurs in this mode, stored energy trip activation occurs. The MCP includes user-selectable trip settings, and the microcontroller reconfigures the comparator threshold levels for user-selectable self-protection levels.

A method to start a motor includes the steps of determining a motor winding voltage (113, 114) threshold; closing the motor starting capacitor relay (112) when needed; closing a contactor (108, 109) to supply power to the motor starting apparatus and the motor circuit; measuring a winding voltage (113, 114); comparing the measured winding voltage (113, 114) to the voltage threshold; and opening the starting capacitor relay (112) when measured winding voltage (113, 114) exceeds the voltage threshold indicating that the motor has been started.

The present invention provides an electric motor with a reduced number of windings on one of the coil windings. The effect of this is that when the motor is in operation, the current that flows through the coil with the reduced number of windings differs from the others, and this difference can be detected to allow accurate control of the motor. To avoid any mechanical imbalance caused by this difference in the number of windings, mechanical compensation means is provided on the arm with the reduced number of windings. Preferably this comprise a further winding that is not electrically connected to the motor circuit.
