A blind spot detector system adapted to the exterior of a vehicle comprising at least one infrared light emitting diode (LED), an infrared photodetector and demodulator, and a microcontroller. The output power of the infrared transmitter is linearly modulated, enabling the blind spot detector to determine the proximity of the detected object. Furthermore, the transmitter output is frequency modulated to screen out random infrared radiation that might adversely affect the operation of the infrared photodetector. The system is calibrated to the position of the attached vehicle by linearly increasing the output power of the transmitter until the rear quadrant of the vehicle is detected when the transmitter is outputting power at a pre-determined calibration level. During normal operation, an object detected while the transmitted power is greater than a predetermined lower threshold and less than the calibration level will activate a LED indicator on the system housing.

On-channel repeater

An on-channel repeater has a receiving antenna for receiving an RF signal and a transmitting antenna for transmitting on the same frequency as the input signal. An amplification path between the antennas provides substantially linear processing and includes a combiner, a decorrelating delay and a power amplifier. A filter estimator receives a reference signal and the combiner output and generates a plurality of control coefficients which are applied to an adaptive filter which filters the reference signal accordingly and applies its output to the combiner. The reference signal is derived not from the output of the decorrelating delay but rather from the output antenna after the power amplifier. Where there is an adjacent transmitter generating potentially interfering signals, the transmitter output is coupled to the same transmitter antenna.

An optical transmitter is of the reflective modulation type and has a means of generating reflection, a mixer for mixing a data stream and a sub-carrier, and an optical modulator for modulating an optical carrier with the output from the mixer in order to avoid optical beat-interference noise arising from, for example, Rayleigh backscattering. The modulator is in one embodiment of the interferometric type such as a Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM) operated to suppress the optical carrier at the transmitter output in order to reduce optical beat interference noise. The modulator preferably implements CSS-AMPSK modulation, which suppresses optical beat noise and achieves strong dispersion tolerance, enabling, for example, 10 Gb / s data transmission over 100 km distance without dispersion compensation. The transmitter may have a duobinary encoder, which encodes the data prior to mixing with the sub-carrier.
