External cavity tunable compact mid-IR laser

A compact mid-IR laser device utilizes an external cavity to tune the laser. The external cavity may employ a Littrow or Littman cavity arrangement. In the Littrow cavity arrangement, a filter, such as a grating, is rotated to provide wavelength gain medium selectivity. In the Littman cavity arrangement, a reflector is rotated to provide tuning. A quantum cascade laser gain medium provides mid-IR frequencies suitable for use in molecular detection by signature absorption spectra. The compact nature of the device is obtained owing to an efficient heat transfer structure, the use of a small diameter aspheric lens for both the output lens and the external cavity lens and a monolithic assembly structure to hold the optical elements in a fixed position relative to one another. The compact housing size may be approximately 20 cm×20 cm×20 cm or less. Efficient heat transfer is achieved using a thermoelectric cooler TEC combined with a high thermal conductivity heat spreader onto which the quantum cascade laser gain medium is thermally coupled. The heat spreader not only serves to dissipate heat and conduct same to the TEC, but also serves as an optical platform to secure the optical elements within the housing in a fixed relationship relative on one another. The small diameter aspheric output and external cavity lens each may have a diameter of 10 mm or less and each lens is positioned to provided a collimated beam output from the quantum cascade laser gain medium. The housing is hermetically sealed to provide a rugged, light weight portable MIR laser source.

Stirling engine having platelet heat exchanging elements

The present invention provides heat exchanging elements for use in Stirling engines. According to the present invention, the heat exchanging elements are made from muliple platelets that are stacked and joined together. The use of platelets to make heat exchanging elements permits Stirling engines to run more effiecient because the heat transfer and combustion processes are improved. In one embodiment, multi-stage combustion can be introduced with platlets, along with the flexibility to use different types of fuels. In another embodiment, a single component constructed from platelets can provide the heat transfer rquirements betweeen the combustion gas / working gas, working gas in the regenerator and the working gas / coolant fluid of a Stirling engine. In another embodiment, the platelet heat exchanging element can recieve solar energy to heat the Stirling engine's working gas. Also, this invention provides a heat exchanging method that allows for multiple fluids to flow in opposing or same direction.

Mosquito incinerator

An apparatus for destroying mosquitoes by luring them into the apparatus where they are killed and their remains are incinerated. In order to lure the mosquitoes to the apparatus a mixture is emitted that attracts mosquitoes. The mixture contains a chemical attractant for mosquitoes that is stored in a container and metered out automatically. The mixture also contains carbon dioxide that is produced by the incineration of the mosquitoes and the chemical attractant. The apparatus includes an electric heater that heats the apparatus so that its skin temperature approximates the temperature of human skin. Once the mosquitoes are within the apparatus, a high velocity stream of recirculated air captures and carries them to a fan where they are killed and shredded. The shredded remains are incinerated to produce the carbon dioxide and to avoid the disposal of captured mosquitoes. Only a small portion of the recirculated air is emitted to the atmosphere thereby minimizing the consumption of electrical energy.

Sheet hole punching apparatus and sheet hole punching method

A cylindrical punch member equipped at the leading end thereof with a hole-punching blade is movably supported on a base frame in a hole-punching direction. A drive means is equipped that applies thrusting force to the punch member; a cam follower member disposed between the base frame and punch member engages a cam means disposed at either the base frame or punch member. An oblique cam surface inclined at a predetermined angle with regard to a hole-punching direction is equipped in cam means to give rotational drive force around an axis of rotation to the punch member that is moved in the hole-punching direction by the drive means. This configuration causes each of a plurality of cylindrical punch members to rotate around their axes of rotation when moved in a hole-punching direction by drive means thereby punching a hole in a sheet with a reduced shear force; the centrifugal force of that punch member rotation causing paper cutting debris to be scattered evenly under the punch member.
