A method for photon counting including the steps of collecting light emitted or reflected/scattered from an object; imaging the object onto a spatial light modulator, applying a series of pseudo-random modulation patterns to the SLM according to standard compressive-sensing theory, collecting the modulated light onto a photon-counting detector, recording the number of photons received for each pattern (by photon counting) and optionally the time of arrival of the received photons, and recovering the spatial distribution of the received photons by the algorithms of compressive sensing (CS).

The present invention discloses an optical system for 3D printing and a control method thereof. The invention relates to measuring the mobility spectra of ions with ion mobility spectrometers (IMS). The invention provides an analog modulation of the ion current of an IMS ion source with a continuous modulation function, the instantaneous frequency of which temporally varies across a large frequency range, and a generation of the mobility spectrum from the measured ion current by a correlation analysis with the modulation pattern. The modulation can, for example, be produced by the gating grid, which is usually present. The analog modulation removes many of the difficulties which occur with square-wave modulation and leads to a surprisingly stable evaluation which is relatively insensitive to noisy signals and produces a high mobility resolution at very low noise.

In one embodiment, an acoustic distance measurement system can use a modulation pattern to modulate a carrier wave. The modulated carrier wave may be transmitted to an acoustic transducer. An echo of the transmitted signal can be detected by correlating the received signal with the modulation pattern. A system and method for THz imaging utilizing a single THz detector that detects an image of a large area and provides good spatial details (high resolution). In one aspect, the THz beam passes through an object to be imaged, and a THz fiber bundle having a plurality of THz fibers collect the THz beam on the other side of the object and transmit the beams to a single THz detector. Each THz fiber imparts a different time delay to the beam traveling therein. Therefore, the spatial information is converted into time information in the form of time delays. Knowing the distance each part of the imaging area must travel (hence the time it takes) before reaching the THz detector, one can recover the spatial information from the time data. In another aspect, the THz fiber bundle is replaced with a mask having an array of holes with each hole having a different depth or a different refractive index. In still another aspect, the THz fiber array is replaced with a plate holding different masks. Each mask may include holes that may be turned on/off with a distinct pattern from all of the other holes. Once the data for each mask has been received, the data for each hole may be extracted according to its modulation pattern.

For transmitting data, a receiving/backscattering arrangement receives, modulates and reflects or backscatters electromagnetic waves emitted by a base station. A system for delivering ultrasound energy to an internal anatomical target includes an ultrasound transducer having multiple transducer elements collectively operable as a phased array; multiple driver circuits, each being connected to at least one of the transducer elements; multiple phase circuits; a switch matrix selectably coupling the driver circuits to the phase circuits; and a controller configured for (i) receiving as input a target average intensity level and/or an energy level energy to be applied to the target and/or a temperature level in target, (ii) identifying multiple sets of the transducer elements, each of the sets corresponding to multiple transducer elements for shaping and/or focusing, as a phased array, ultrasound energy at the target across tissue intervening between the target and the ultrasound transducer, and (iii) sequentially operating the transducer-element sets to apply and maintain the target average energy level at the target. In various embodiments, the controller operates each of the transducer element sets in accordance with a pulse-width modulation pattern having a duty cycle selected to achieve the target average intensity level, energy level, and/or temperature level at the target in accordance with a time constant of the target tissue.

A method and apparatus is disclosed which can reproduce multi-value data with high reproducibility from a hologram recording medium having data recorded in multi-values therein and can reduce the error rate of reproduction data. A reference gradation pattern is recorded in a medium, and luminance unevenness of a gradation pattern obtained by reproducing the gradation pattern is corrected. A gamma characteristic of the medium is determined based on the reproduction gradation pattern, and a modulation pattern produced using easily separable luminance values determined based on the gamma characteristic is displayed on a spatial light modulator to record data in multi-values into the medium. Thereupon, the data are oversampled and recorded, and a block of the reproduced data is decoded depending upon a sequence of relative luminance levels of pixels in the block to decode the entire reproduced multi-value data.

According to one aspect and example, a method is provided for handling write protected storage devices. The method includes generating a read signal from a portion of a magnetic storage medium and determining if a modulation pattern is present in the read signal, the modulation pattern associated with an identification mark comprising a pattern of indicia associated with a recording layer of the magnetic storage medium. The identification mark indicates that the storage medium is a write protected storage device (e.g., a write-once-read-many “WORM” storage device or the like). If the storage medium is write protected, a media drive is restricted from write operations to the storage medium according to the particular write protected scheme, e.g., WORM, write append only, or the like.
