Multi-focal treatment of skin with acoustic energy

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for applying acoustic energy to the skin. Acoustic waveguides with elements of varying thickness or shape are disclosed which deliver energy to more than one depth below a surface of the skin substantially simultaneously. The invention is especially useful with devices that focus ultrasound energy by condensing a propagating wavefront. The invention compensates for the mismatch in acoustic properties of the device's waveguide and the biological tissue that typically cause portions of the collapsing wavefront to lag behind other portions and, thereby, limit the focusing capabilities of acoustic treatment devices.

Treatment of skin with acoustic energy

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for applying acoustic energy to the skin whereby the wavefront can be controlled to confine the focused energy to a desired subsurface region. Acoustic waveguides are disclosed which compensate for distortions that otherwise occur when a focused acoustic beam crosses a boundary, such as the transition from a treatment device to a target region of skin.

Photography apparatus, photography method and photography program

An auxiliary light source such as a flash is controlled for highly accurately reflecting a lighting condition with less effect of a factor other than the lighting condition such as contrasting density caused by shadow or black compression or white compression. For this purpose, a parameter acquisition unit obtains weighting parameters for principal components representing lighting conditions in a face region in an image detected by a face detection unit, by fitting to the detected face region a mathematical model generated according to a method of AAM using a plurality of sample images representing human faces in different lighting conditions. A flash control unit obtains a flash control condition by referring to a reference table according to the parameters, and controls flash light emission according to the control condition.

Photography apparatus, photography method, and photography program

An exposure value is determined based on a face region, with high accuracy and with less effect of a background region or density contrast caused by shadow. For this purpose, a face detection unit detects a face region from a face candidate region in a through image detected by a face candidate detection unit, by fitting to the face candidate region a mathematical model generated by a method of AAM using a plurality of sample images representing human faces. An exposure value determination unit then determines an exposure value for photography, based on the face region.

Methods and compositions concerning poxviruses and cancer

The present invention concerns methods and compositions for the treatment of cancer and cancer cells using altered poxviruses, including a vaccinia virus that has been altered to generate a more effective therapeutic agent. Such poxviruses are engineered to be attenuated or weakened in their ability to affect normal cells. In some embodiments, methods and compositions involve poxviruses that possess mutations that result in poxviruses with diminished or eliminated capability to implement an antiviral response in a host. Poxviruses with these mutations in combination with other mutations can be employed for more effective treatment of cancer.

Singlet telescopes with controllable ghosts for laser beam forming

A singlet telescope is provided for reshaping the laser beam to a larger or smaller diameter while maintaining the inherent quality of the beam. Applications for the singlet telescope include intercavity expansion to accommodate the damage thresh-old of various components, expansion of beams to match the size of different wavelengths for final collimation, and shrinking of beams to provide high irradiance for nonlinear processes such as optical parametric oscillation and frequency doubling, with the above applications usually requiring low power magnification or demagnification. Problems involving the utilization of these telescopes over wide temperature ranges and ghost reflections in which a light is reflected back to a pumping laser are minimized with the singlet construction, with the ghost reflections potentially creating damage of components including self-damage or breakdown of air, as well as damage to a Q-switched resonator which causes pre-lasing.
