A
light emitting diode includes a support substrate, a first conductive type
semiconductor layer, an upper insulating layer on the first conductive type
semiconductor layer, a mesa including an
active layer and a second conductive type
semiconductor layer and located below a portion of the first conductive type semiconductor layer to
expose an edge of the first conductive type semiconductor layer, the mesa including a second through hole exposing the first conductive type semiconductor layer, a first
electrode including a first contact portion electrically connected to the first conductive type semiconductor layer through the first through hole and a second contact portion electrically connected to the first conductive type semiconductor layer through the second through hole, a second
electrode electrically connected to the second conductive type semiconductor layer, and at least one upper
electrode pad connected to the second electrode, the first through hole being disposed in an area surrounded by the edge of the mesa, a portion of each second through hole being surrounded by the
active layer and the second conductive type semiconductor layer and disposed along the edge of the mesa, and the upper insulating layer including a plurality of material
layers.
