Use of selection pressures to enable microbial biosynthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates from anaerobic degradation products

A method for inexpensive and efficient PHA biosynthesis includes operating a sequencing bioreactor in alternating phases of nutrient deprivation and carbon feedstock deprivation to select for robust PHA-producing microbes. Preferably, the bioreactor is operated in a non-sterile manner with mixed cultures of methanotrophs. The method also preferably uses periodic biomass-wasting (PHA harvesting) at the end of the carbon feed phase, gradually lengthening the time period of carbon deprivation phase to create a penalty for rapid PHA degradation and incentive for PHA accumulation. Also, bacterial enrichment cultures may be introduced periodically. The PHA-accumulating bacteria are preferably grown on common anaerobic degradation products, specifically volatile fatty acids, such as acetate and propionate, and methane gas. The PHA has useful applications in bioplastics and other products.

Integrated circuit configuration system and method

The present invention systems and methods enable configuration of functional components in integrated circuits. A present invention system and method can flexibly change the operational characteristics of functional components in an integrated circuit die based upon a variety of factors. In one embodiment, manufacturing yields, compatibility characteristics, performance requirements, and system health (e.g., the number of components operating properly) are factored into changes to the operational characteristics of functional components. In one exemplary implementation, the changes to operational characteristics of a functional component are coordinated with changes to other functional components. Workflow scheduling and distribution is also adjusted based upon the changes to the operational characteristics of the functional components. For example, a functional component configuration controller changes the operational characteristics settings and provides an indication to a workflow distribution component. The workflow distribution component changes the workflow schedule based upon the operational characteristics settings (e.g., work flow is diverted to or away from functional components).

System and method for increasing die yield

The present invention systems and methods facilitate increased die yields by flexibly changing the operational characteristics of functional components in an integrated circuit die. The present invention system and method enable integrated circuit chips with defective functional components to be salvaged. Defective functional components in the die are disabled in a manner that maintains the basic functionality of the chip. A chip is tested and a functional component configuration process is performed on the chip based upon results of the testing. If an indication of a defective functional component is received, the functional component is disabled. Workflow is diverted from disabled functional components to enabled functional components.

Antenna for hearing device, ear tip and hearing device provided with such an antenna

The present invention relates to an antenna module for a hearing device. The antenna module comprises a hollow core provided with an axial passageway and a winding around the core which is connectable with a hearing device. The antenna module is arranged to be at least partially contained within the ear canal of a user. This enables the antenna to be separated from sources of interference, since it can be positioned inside the ear canal away from hearing device electronics, thus reducing requirements for shielding and / or compensation. The invention further relates to an ear tip and a hearing device comprising such an antenna module.

Hybrid projector LED low beam headlamp

The optics system is a lamp assembly which produces the desired beam pattern by using a reflector, a lens, a retainer lens, and an LED as a light source. The lamp assembly has three main components (the reflector, the lens, and the retainer lens) that maintain proper alignment between the light source and the reflector, the lens, and the retainer lens. The optical system collects substantially 100% of the light from the light source while effectively shaping the beam pattern using both cylindrical and revolved reflector elements. The lens has a saddle-shape which is used with the surface of a revolution to eliminate any “dogbone” light pattern shape. The use of a reflective element forms the foreground of the beam pattern.

Straw-filling device

InactiveUS7047709B2Easily adapt and changeEffectively and efficiently utilizedPackage sterilisationWrapper twisting/gatheringDrinking strawSlide plate
An automated, fully programmable, and adaptable device fills straws or straw-like packages with any type of flowing, or flowable, liquid. A straw is dropped from a hopper down chutes into a capture area where it is held and filled with liquid, after which it is sealed. The straw dropping, capture, filling, and sealing actions are preferably automatically controlled by a preprogrammed electronic controller. The major elements of a typical embodiment of the invention include means for dropping a straw or other receptacle into a fixed mounting position consistently, optional means for heating fluids throughout the fill process, means for filling the receptacle, and means for sealing the receptacle. The straw hopper has a retractable slide plate at its base that slides back to allow only one straw at a time to fall through the chutes into the capture area. In the preferred embodiment, the slide plate at the bottom of the hopper moves back and forth in a predefined fully programmable sequence. In one embodiment, when the straw comes to rest in the capture area, it is pinched and sealed at the bottom in preparation for filling. A filling nozzle moves into a predefined position over the straw to be filled and the straw is filled with a preset amount of liquid. After filling, the top of the straw is pinched and then sealed, completing packaging of the liquid. Preferably, the sequence of actions may be easily adapted or changed by reprogramming the automatic controller. After sealing, the straw is dropped into the collection area. Preferably, steps are monitored by one or more sensor monitors, preferably with one sensor monitoring each of the three phases of operation.
