The present invention is a method and apparatus for protection of products and packaging against counterfeiting using dedicated authentication protocol coupled with portable devices. It is based on the product identification information, i.e., PIN, generated by the product manufacturer, stored in the product database and added to product or packaging in an open and / or a hidden form. The open part is directly available to the consumer before buying, opening or consuming the product or package or damaging its integrity while the hidden part is only revealed after these operations. The hidden information can also be disappearing after a predefined interval of time or number of trials or usages. Both parts are communicated to the authenticationserver in a predefined order to verify the product or package authenticity. The presence, absence, or multiple requests for the same product PIN, confirm or reject product authenticity or detect attempt at attacking the system or at using counterfeited products.
A system and method of synchronizing clocks in a distributed network is disclosed. A simple 1-pulse-per-second timing pulse is routed to time-stamping units in each network device and utilized to measure traffic-dependent synchronization packet residence delays within network elements. Synchronization messages are updated to reflect the measured residence times, thus creating transparent clocks that can readily be synchronized across the network. The simple timing pulse architecture allows the method to be applied readily both to new designs and to retrofit existing hardware.

In an optical waveguide device, a laser beam is collected to an end face of a channel waveguide, and introduced into a PLZT thin film optical waveguide. The incident laser beam, when emitted from the channel waveguide, diverges in the PLZT waveguide, permeates a thin film lens and is collimated into 0.4 Mm size. When a high frequencyvoltage is not applied to a comb Al electrode, the laser beam is collected after penetrating through the second thin film and emitted from the end face through the channel waveguide to form an emission beam. When the high frequencyvoltage is applied to the comb Al electrode, a diffractiongrating is formed by an acousto-optic effect, and the laser beam is deflected. The deflected laser beam, when penetrating through the second thin film lens, is collected and emitted from the end face through the channel waveguide in adjacent with the above-described channel waveguide to form a deflected emission beam.
