A qualifying connection for an instrument attaches to a source of electrosurgery energy and to the instrument and has first and second parts coupled to the instrument and the source, respectively. Optical couplings on the connection transmit invisible energy to identify the instrument and are proximate on the first and second parts. A light modifier on the first part is proximal to the second part for modification of radiation in the infrared wavelengths so infrared transmitters encode signals and non-contact coded proximity detectors on the second part are the coupled detectors. Mechanical attachments include conjugating male and female portions which physically extend between the parts and matingly engage. An identifying circuit couples to the second part and responds to invisible light optically communicated across the couplings for verifying the type of instrument connected by the cable to the source. A method of using the connection has steps including juxtaposing and conjugating the parts with attachments and couplings for transmitting invisible optical energy to identify the instrument. The method includes modifying the invisible optical energy with geographically disposed proximate couplings of the parts when the attachments engage and the couplings are proximate. Passing and assessing signals of the modified energy are transmitted through the connection and to an identifying circuit in the source.

Charge recycling for multi-touch controllers

The recycling of charge when two or more of the drive lines of a touch sensor panel are being simultaneously stimulated with the in-phase and anti-phase components of a stimulation signal is disclosed. To perform charge recycling, a discharge path can be selectively formed between drive lines being stimulated with the in-phase and anti-phase components of the stimulation signal. A multiplexer can be coupled to the driver of each drive line and the common discharge path. When charge recycling is to be performed, control logic can configure the multiplexers to isolate the driver and connect the drive lines being stimulated with the in-phase component of the stimulation signal with the drive lines being stimulated with the anti-phase component of the stimulation signal. The capacitance on the charged-up drive lines can then discharge to the capacitance on the discharged drive lines.

Linear displacement sensor using a position sensitive photodetector

A position sensing device comprises a light source that radiates diffuse source light along an optical axis direction to a detector, and a moving aperture arrangement positioned between the source and detector, to move perpendicular to the optical axis direction. The moving aperture arrangement comprises first and second limiting apertures, which angularly filter and transmit the diffuse source light to form a measurement spot on the detector. At least one signal output by the detector is indicative of a position of the movable member along a measurement axis. The angular intensity distribution of the angularly filtered rays of light which form the measurement spot is more consistent as a function of position along the measurement axis than the angular intensity distribution of the source light. The resulting consistent intensity distribution within the measurement spot throughout the measurement range enhances measurement linearity and accuracy.

A technique is set forth that is designed to reduce RF induced power in high field MR imaging that includes application of an initial contrast preserving phase of RF pulses. These initial RF pulses are designed to have a constant, relatively high flip angle over the initial contrast preserving phase. Following an effective TE, a ramp down phase is applied that has a limited number of RF pulses with a flip angle that is less than the flip angle of those in the initial contrast preserving phase. Further, the RF pulses in the ramp down phase have a flip angle that is decreased over the ramp down phase. This technique provides improved resolution and steady contrast and SNR, while significantly reducing induced RF power.

Variable speed controller for a family of multi-tap motors

A system for variable speed motor control provides continuous variable speed motor controller for each motor or motor application within a family of multi-tap motors while using a single controller. The single controller utilizes a wave chop technique providing variable speed motor control through the operating range for each motor tap and seamlessly passes the motor control to each succeeding tap to provide smoothly varying and continuous variable speed motor control throughout the operating range of the multi-tap motor. The system can use a small wave chop firing angle for each tap, thus maximizing the signal to the motor for each tap and minimizing heat build up in the motor. Amplitude combining method for phase locking fiber lasers

A method for implementing a coherent laser beam combining system in which a master laser oscillator output is split into N signals, fed through N phase adjusters and N amplifiers and combined in a coherent power combiner. The output of the combiner is sampled and sent to a processor. The processor selects one of the N phase adjusters, sweeps the phase in small steps over a 2π range, and locks the phase of that adjuster to the phase that corresponds to the maximum value of the combiner sample for that sweep cycle. The process is repeated for all the remaining phase adjusters resulting in maximizing the combiner output. The sweep cycles are repeated continuously to correct any phase errors that may occur over time. A similar method can be used in which both the polarizations and the phases of the N signals are maximized to thereby maximize the output of the coherent power combiner.

Analysis of a sample to determine its characteristic cycle time

An analysis for determining a characteristic cycle time of a sample. Active elements in the sample are excited with sufficient intensity and duration larger than the characteristic cycle time that at least some of the active elements are re-excited to an excited state substantially immediately following relaxation to a ground state, detecting quanta emitted by the active elements in the sample to obtain a detected signal, and analyzing the detected signal to derive the characteristic cycle time. The number of active elements in the sample and the intensity of the excitation are such that quanta are detected in a stream in which individual quanta are distinguishable from each other.
