Ultrasonic impact machining of body surfaces to correct defects and strengthen work surfaces

Metallic workpieces of diverse shapes having work surfaces which are deformed at the surface and adjacent sub-surface layers by surface impact from ultrasonic transducers employing freely axially moving impacting elements propelled and energized by a transducer oscillating surface vibrating periodically at an ultrasonic frequency. The impacting elements are propelled in a random aperiodic and controlled impact mode at different phases of the periodic oscillation cycles. The transducer may be portable and provides a series of mechanically interconnected stages having mechanical resonances harmonically related as a multiple of the primary ultrasonic frequency and have matched stage resistances under instantaneous loading when the impact elements are driven by the transducer oscillating surface into the surface of the workpiece. This mode of operation produces Q-factor amplification of the input ultrasonic power oscillator energy at the impact needles and high propulsion velocities making it possible to machine metallic workpiece bodies to greater depths for compressing the metal to increase compressive strength of the workpiece work surfaces to substantially the ultimate material strength. The impact machining is done at ambient temperatures.

The present invention is a hybrid system for generating power from hydrocarbon and alcohol fuels using a two-stage process to achieve high overall energy conversion efficiency. The first stage is a reformer and fuel cell subsystem that uses an internal combustion engine operated at an air / fuel ratio richer than stoichiometric as a partial oxidation reformer for commonly available liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon or alcohol fuels. The engine produces shaft power and a product gas mixture containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and traces of light hydrocarbons that is used as fuel in fuel cells to generate electric power. The second stage is a heat engine subsystem that captures heat from the reformer and fuel cell subsystem, and produces additional shaft power. In addition to efficiency, advantages include adaptability to a variety of fuels, quick system startup with immediate shaft power availability, and low emission of pollutantants.

Over speed control circuit for a wind turbine generator which maximizes the power exported from the generator over time

An over speed control circuit for a wind turbine generator is disclosed which optimizes the time that the wind turbine generator is operational and thus maximizes the power output over time. The over speed control circuit forms a closed feedback loop which periodically measures the output voltage of the wind turbine generator in order to regulate its speed by electronically controlling the load on the generator. The over speed control circuit in accordance with the present invention is adapted to work in conjunction with known over speed protection lock out relays. More particularly, the over speed control circuit causes a short circuit to be placed the generator terminals when the generator voltage reaches a threshold value, relatively less than the threshold value used to trigger the over speed lockout relay. As such, the over speed control circuit minimizes the operation of the lockout relay, thereby maximizing the power output of the generator over time making such wind turbine generator systems much more practical as a renewable energy source.
