Electrical resistance within the battery is decreased and thermal conductivity of the cell is increased allowing for superior heat removal from the battery and increased efficiency. Increased internal pressure within the battery can be alleviated without damaging or removing the battery from service while keeping the contents of the battery sealed off from the atmosphere by a pressure release system. Nonoperative cells within a battery assembly can also be removed from service by shorting the nonoperative cell thus decreasing battery life.

The present invention provides, in at least one embodiment, a scheme which is effective in suppressing detrimental coherence effects such as random backscatter. In a fiber laser having a master oscillator power amplifier design, inserting a decorrelator in between the master oscillator and a first power amplifier or inserting a decorrelator in between the first power amplifier and a second power amplifier to reduce random backscatter, which allows for much more energy to be stored and higher gain without the risk of catastrophic optical damage, thus increasing the peak power that can be delivered as useful laser power. Backscattering can be further reduced by having the master oscillator depolarized, injection locked, and spectrally broadened to reduce the coherence length of the master oscillator.

System and Method for Converting AC Power to DC Power Using Sensorless Field Oriented Control

High voltage DC power, which is produced by rectifying AC power generated by an AC generator, is controlled and regulated without the need for measuring the position of the rotor with hardware. A Field oriented controller uses a sliding mode observer to estimate the position of the rotor without the use of position detection hardware. The estimated position of the rotor and the AC current are then used by the field oriented controller algorithm to regulate a DC output from a rectifier driven by an AC generator.

A system and method to enable vibration mediated communication between electrical devices such as photovoltaic solar panel controllers. The electrical devices may be connected to a mesh network with individual router devices. The individual router devices will send and receive data packets by creating or detecting vibrations in a solid vibration conducting media (such as the solar power wiring) that connects the individual electrical devices. Often at least one centralized control device is used to periodically request sensor data packets from the individual router devices and electrical devices. When the electrical devices are photovoltaic solar arrays, the centralized control device may, for example, be used to compute the proper adjustments for the solar arrays that will optimize the overall power output from the photovoltaic solar array. The control device will then send adjustment data packets back to the individual router devices through the mesh network, thus optimizing overall power output.
