The system comprises a self-adaption cruise mode selection unit, a data acquisition unit, an ECU central control unit and an execution unit. A self-adaption cruise mode comprises a constant speed cruise mode and a tracking mode. Data of a front barrier are acquired through a vehicle-mounted millimeter wave radar and sent to the ECU central control unit, the front barrier can be automatically recognized, and the intervention operation of a driver is reduced through different measures; various information is acquired through an ESP sensor, addition of unnecessary hardware equipment is reduced, and the cost is saved; the influences, on a vehicle, of the outdoor sleety weather are considered for distance setting in the tracking mode, the tracking distance is automatically adjusted by an ECU, a one-time linear function is adopted for a time interval, a higher respond speed is achieved, and the riding comfort is considered as well. By means of the self-adaption cruise system and method, the driving fatigue of the driver can be effectively lowered, and meanwhile driving safety is improved.
