Percutaneous chemical sensor based on fluorescence resonant energy transfer (FRET)

A biosensing device for detecting biological analytes, and methods of use and manufacture, are disclosed. The device includes a biosensing element that can remain implanted for extended periods of time. The biosensing element is connected to an optical fiber terminating outside of the body. The optical fiber is also connected to an information analyzer. The information analyzer directs light through the optical fiber into the biosensing element. The light excites fluorophores, created by a chemical reaction between analytes and biosensing material within the biosensing element. Emitted fluorescent light is redirected through the optical fiber to the information analyzer. Detectors detect the deflected fluorescent emissions and, according to their determined wavelength, report the presence or quantity of specific analytes to the patient on an external display.

An apparatus for generating seismic body waves in a hydrocarbon reservoir includes a closed-loop borehole source having a resonant cavity for generating resonant energy, a drive source and a control unit. The drive source injects pressure pulses to the resonant cavity at a predetermined or selectable pressure and frequency. The fluid circulates between the cavity and the drive source in a closed-loop fashion. In another embodiment, the borehole source utilizes a smart or controllable material that is responsive to an applied excitation field. The cavity includes an excitation coil for providing an excitation field that changes a material property of the smart fluid. The control unit is programmed to adjust operating parameters to produce seismic waves having a selected frequency and amplitude. In one embodiment, a control unit adjusts operating parameters in response to measured parameters of interest or surface commands.

Resonant wireless energy transmission device

The invention discloses a non-radioactive magnetic resonant energy transmission system based on a serial-parallel circuit model. The system comprises a pair of congruent coils and a circuit consisting of additional capacitors, and is characterized in that: the circuit connected with the coils is a serial-parallel circuit model, namely that the leads at the two ends of the coils are connected in parallel with a capacitor; then the parallel circuit is connected in series with another capacitor; and finally a transmitting coil is connected with a high-frequency transmitting power supply, and a receiving coil is connected with a receiving load. The novel system has the advantages of a serial circuit and a parallel circuit model, the transmission efficiency is remarkably improved, and the transmission distance is increased. Meanwhile, the maximum energy transmission efficiency under different distances can be realized by adjusting the serial capacitor and the parallel capacitor.

The novel laser gain medium includes a host material, a plurality of quantum dots dispersed throughout the host material, and a plurality of laser active ions surrounding each of the quantum dots. The laser active ions are disposed in close proximity to the quantum dots such that energy absorbed by the quantum dots is non-radiatively transferred to the ions via a Forster resonant energy transfer, thereby exciting the ions to produce laser output. In an illustrative embodiment, each quantum dot is surrounded by an external shell doped with the laser active ions.

The multi-group section perturbation method comprises the following steps: (1), on the basis of ENDF / B, making a multi-group section database and a point-by-point section database at different temperatures by using a nuclear database section processing program NJOY, and making the point-by-point section database in a resonant reaction channel at a resonant energy section into an ultra-fine-group database according to the equal rib width; (2), perturbing the point-by-point section database in the energy section corresponding to a certain energy group in a certain reaction channel so as to obtain a perturbed point-by-point section database; (3), strictly transferring perturbation of the point-by-point section database into the multi-group section database by using a linear and nonlinear perturbation transferring method; and (4), reconstructing by adopting a reaction channel section self-consistency principle to obtain a perturbed multi-group section database. According to the invention, the section of a basic reaction channel can be finely sampled; approximate treatment in the multi-group section perturbation process can also be reduced; and thus, a precise multi-group section sample can be obtained.

Non-resonant energy harvesting devices and methods

Disclosed is an energy harvesting device which can produce electrical power from vibrational energy over a wide range of frequencies. The energy harvester includes a housing having opposing slots. A bendable substrate is at least partially positioned within the housing and at least partially extends through the opposing housing slots. A piezoelectric element is positioned on the bendable substrate and a weight cooperates with the bendable substrate. A stopper is positioned on each end of the bendable substrate that extends outside the housing; the stoppers are configured to maintain a portion of the bendable substrate within the housing such that the bendable substrate is freely movable within the housing. Vibrational energy causes collisions between the bendable substrate and the housing such that the forces on the piezoelectric element generate power.

A tunable nanoscale resonator has potential applications in precise mass, force, position, and frequency measurement. One embodiment of this device consists of a specially prepared multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) suspended between a metal electrode and a mobile, piezoelectrically controlled contact. By harnessing a unique telescoping ability of MWNTs, one may controllably slide an inner nanotube core from its outer nanotube casing, effectively changing its length and thereby changing the tuning of its resonance frequency. Resonant energy transfer may be used with a nanoresonator to detect molecules at a specific target oscillation frequency, without the use of a chemical label, to provide label-free chemical species detection.

The cable comprises a non-Newtonian fluid (NNF) in a cavity of a flexible tube. The NNF is characterized by viscosity that varies with shear stress.
