Spinal stabilization system with rigid and flexible elements

A spinal stabilization system generally comprises first and second anchor members configured to be secured to first and second vertebrae within a patient's body, a flexible element secured to the first anchor member, and a rigid element secured to the second anchor member. An end portion of the rigid element is coupled to an end portion of the flexible so that the system is able to provide both rigid and dynamic stabilization. The coupling is maintained even if the flexible element relaxes after a period of time within the patient's body.

Contact element and ceiling element for a heating and cooling ceiling

In order to improve the heat-conducting connection between a contact element (3) and a ceiling panel (1) which are adhesively bonded to one another, the contact panel (5) of the contact element (3) is provided with an adhesive depression (10) in the contact surface (6), said depression taking up only part of said contact surface, while the remaining part of the latter rests directly against the upper side of the ceiling panel (1). The contact panel (5) may be elastically or plastically deformable, e.g. along a bending groove (9), with the result that it adapts more easily to irregularities, such as those caused, for example, by slight sagging of the ceiling panel (1). This permits larger widths of the contact panel (5) without impairing the thermal contact. In order to ensure close abutment of the parts of the contact surface (6) which are not adhesively bonded to the upper side of the ceiling panel (1), the contact panel (5) can be appropriately prestressed.

Apparatus for thawing frozen biological fluids utilizing heating plates and oscillatory motion to enhance heat transfer by mixing

An improved dry heat method and apparatus for thawing frozen biological fluids utilizing electrically heated plates and oscillatory motion to enhance heat transfer by mixing as the fluid thaws. Bags of frozen fluid to be thawed are lightly squeezed between two heating plates, one of which is gently oscillated to facilitate mixing of the thawing fluid, increasing heat transfer and reducing time required for thawing. Direct contact of the heating plates against the bag surfaces increases heat transfer by eliminating insulative effects of another bag wall and a water boundary layer, compared to water bath units. Flat (or curved to conform to bag) heat pipes are preferred as heating plates compared to plain aluminum sheet. Flat heat pipes have the property of an isothermal heating surface, thus maximizing heat transfer to the coldest areas, preventing hot spots, and simplifying heating plate temperature control.

Method and apparatus for raising, leveling, and supporting displaced foundation allowing for readjustment after installation

A method and apparatus for raising, leveling, and supporting a foundation by placing steel piers beneath the necessary peripheral and interior beams and using a jack to raise the slab beams, then allowing the slab beams to rest on piers. The piers are constructed from steel piling segments, driven into the ground, connected with adhesive, and anchored at a depth offering reactive force sufficient to support the foundation. The piling is pointed at its bottom facilitating insertion and preventing upheaval. A crown is attached to the upper most end of each pier which offers a platform to provide a stable support once the jack is removed and easy access to the slab beam for later readjustment. Multiple piers are utilized to achieve a level foundation. Piers may be placed beneath interior beams on a slab without drilling holes in the interior of the slab.

Airbag cushion comprising sewn reinforcement seams

A method utilizing welds, reinforced with sewn seams, to adhere two fabrics together to form an inflatable airbag cushion. Although welded seams provide better and more easily produced attachment points between multiple layers of fabrics, not to mention improved manners of reducing air or gas permeability as such attachment points, the utilization of sewn seams adjacent to such welded areas provides stronger reinforcement, and thus more reliable non-permeable fabrics. Seam welding generally concerns the utilization of a film on the underside of a fabric which, upon contact with a second, film-treated fabric and upon exposure to high frequency energy, forms a bead of polymeric material at the attachment point between the two fabric layers. Lower numbers of sewn seams may be utilized to permit sufficient reinforcement if the size of the formed polymeric bead if of sufficient size to permit thorough sealing and adhesion between the fabric layers. Such a specific reinforced fabric, as well as high bead-size welded airbag fabrics are encompassed within this invention.

Twist-lock terminal connection system

An electrical terminal connection system includes first and second terminals that are interlocked by placing the first terminal on top of the second terminal and rotating the first terminal. The first terminal has a planar ring section with an outer perimeter and a centrally located aperture. The perimeter has cut-out portions. Inclined spring elements extend from the ring section near the outer perimeter. The second terminal includes a semi-circular part with an outer periphery and a centrally located collar. Curved walls extend perpendicularly from the outer periphery. The walls have ledges projecting over the semi-circular part. Aligning the cut-out portions of the first terminal with the curved walls and ledges of the second terminal enables the planar ring section of the first terminal to be placed on the semi-circular part of the second terminal, with the aperture receiving the collar. Rotating or twisting the first terminal causes the spring elements to contact and slide under the ledges. Simultaneously, a catch extending from the second terminal moves behind a locking edge formed in one of the cut-out portions of the first terminal as a side of the first terminal abuts against one of the curved walls. This prevents further rotation in either direction, maintaining the spring elements in physical and electrical contact with the ledges and interlocking the terminals. Depressing the catch enables reverse rotation and separation of the terminals.
