Method for machining multi-material workpiece by electrical discharge machining

The invention relates to a method for machining a multi-material workpiece by electrical discharge machining, the workpiece comprising at least two different phases. The machining process is performed by applying discrete pulses to the gap between the electrode and the multi-material workpiece. An ignition voltage is applied to the gap to cause dielectric breakdown, and then a discharge current pulse is applied to cause material removal or material remelting. At least two different phases of the multi-material workpiece are machined in the same machining operation, and the different phases of the multi-material workpiece at which a current discharge occurs are identified in real time based on monitored process signals that are stable at or after a dielectric breakdown. At least one pulse parameter setting of the current discharge current pulse is adjusted based on the identified different phases of the multi-material workpiece.
