Inflatable retractor

InactiveUS20080081951A1Adequate visualizationMinimizing tissue creepSurgerySurgical operationSurgical site
The present invention provides an inflatable retractor for providing access to a surgical site, such as a patient's spine, during a surgical process. When used in spinal surgery, the inflatable retractor allows a surgeon to operate on one or more spinal levels. The inflatable retractor includes an inflatable body defining a central cavity, wherein the body is flaccid in a non-inflated state and increasingly rigid in an inflated state. The inflatable retractor is inserted into an incision in a deflated, or partially inflated, state and then inflated once the retractor is in position. The inflation of the retractor retracts skin and muscle from the surgical site, allowing adequate visualization of the surgical site and forms a passage providing access for implants and surgical instruments to pass through the retractor and into the surgical site.

Fin field effect transistor and method of manufacturing the same

In a fin field effect transistor (FET), an active pattern protrudes in a vertical direction from a substrate and extends across the substrate in a first horizontal direction. A first silicon nitride pattern is formed on the active pattern, and a first oxide pattern and a second silicon nitride pattern are sequentially formed on the substrate and on a sidewall of a lower portion of the active pattern. A device isolation layer is formed on the second silicon nitride pattern, and a top surface of the device isolation layer is coplanar with top surfaces of the oxide pattern and the second silicon nitride pattern. A buffer pattern having an etching selectivity with respect to the second silicon nitride pattern is formed between the first oxide pattern and the second silicon nitride pattern. Internal stresses that can be generated in sidewalls of the active pattern are sufficiently released and an original shape of the first silicon nitride pattern remains unchanged, thereby improving electrical characteristics of the fin FET.

A person can safely descend from a burning high-rise building or the like using an inflatable flying body that has a hollow conical form in an inflated deployed condition, but is deflated and folded into a backpack form in a stowed condition. The flying body includes an upper stabilizing ring, a lower nose structure with a pneumatic damping body, spoke struts extending conically therebetween, a cover skin covering the abovementioned inflatable components to form the conical outer surface and provide aerodynamic braking drag, and gas generators to inflate the inflatable components. A person straps on the apparatus in the stowed backpack form and pulls a handle to actuate the gas generators for inflating the apparatus, whereby the expanding apparatus ejects the person from the building and then orients itself in a nose-down attitude during the descent. The pneumatic damping body damps and dissipates the landing impact energy.

Accommodating intraocular lens with ciliary body activation

An accommodative lens assembly includes a lens body defining an optic lens, a haptic system, and a wing. The lens body is formed and implanted into an eye in a disaccommodative configuration. The haptic system includes one or more haptics that support the optic lens and transmits forces from an anatomical structure such as a ciliary body of the eye, causing the optic lens to deform into an accommodative configuration. In order to stabilize the optic lens so that the optic lens is not displaced from its implantation site, the wing anchors the optic lens within an anterior capsulorhexis of the capsular bag such that the transmitted forces that deform the optic lens during accommodation do not also displace the optic lens from its implanted position. When implanted, the optic lens is anterior to the capsular bag.
