When this type of valve is tripped, the flow is quickly stopped and an indicator disc tells the operator that the electrical circuit has been opened by a failure somewhere in the system. When the system failure has been corrected so that the circuit is again closed, the valve can be opened by the action of the hand lever. If, however, the system failure has not been satisfactorily corrected, the circuit will remain open and moving the hand lever will not open the valve, because the valve stem remains disengaged from the handle. In a solenoid-operated safety shutoff valve, a spring action closes the valve instantly when an electric current fails and the solenoid ceases to be energized. The solenoid circuit is generally arranged so that it is broken upon failure of any element of the system. This valve cannot be re-opened until the solenoid is again energized. A safety shutoff valve should be fail-safe, that is close upon failure of any element of the input control system, air pressure, fuel pressure, current from a flame detector, or current from other safety devices such as low water cutoff, and high pressure cutoff.

Double block valve with proving system

A double block valve and a valve proving system are disclosed. The double block valve is actuated by a single actuator and includes a valve body housing a cavity. The cavity defines an upstream portion with a fluid inlet and a downstream portion with a fluid outlet. A seating assembly is interposed between the upstream and the downstream portions. A first and a second blocking element are disposed in the valve body and are both movable within the cavity between opened and closed positions. With the first and second blocking elements both contacting the seating assembly, the space therebetween defines an enclosed space with a finite volume. The proving system is used for two safety shut-off valves on a valve train, such as a double block valve. The proving system connects to an enclosed space established between the two safety shut-off valves and includes a pair of three-way valves, oppositely biased pressure switches, and a pump, all of which are interconnected through pneumatic conduits. The proving system uses pressure accumulation and timed decay to determine the integrity of the two safety shut-off valves of the valve train.

Fluid control valves, such as a humidifying module bypass valve, an inlet shutoff valve, an outlet shutoff valve are opened and closed by the pressure of air flowing in a fluid flow path. The pressure of air flowing in the fluid flow path is regulated, based on a drive demand pressure emitted to drive the flow control valves, by the flow rate of air discharged from an air compressor, the degree of opening of a fuel cell bypass valve, the degree of opening of an air pressure regulation valve, etc. The drive demand pressure for driving a shutoff valve is set such that, for example, the greater the absolute value of the negative pressure inside the fuel cell stack, the higher the drive demand pressure, and the air pressure is controlled to be the drive demand pressure. Since the pressure of air flowing in the fluid flow path is regulated based on a drive demand pressure of the fluid control valves, the response of drive and reliability of the fluid control valves are better than those in the case where, for example, the pressure is regulated based on a request from a fuel cell.
