142 results about "Laser propulsion" patented technology

Laser propulsion is a form of beam-powered propulsion where the energy source is a remote (usually ground-based) laser system and separate from the reaction mass. This form of propulsion differs from a conventional chemical rocket where both energy and reaction mass come from the solid or liquid propellants carried on board the vehicle.

A hybrid propulsion aircraft is described having a distributed electric propulsion system. The distributed electric propulsion system includes a turbo shaft engine that drives one or more generators through a gearbox. The generator provides AC power to a plurality of ducted fans (each being driven by an electric motor). The ducted fans may be integrated with the hybrid propulsion aircraft's wings. The wings can be pivotally attached to the fuselage, thereby allowing for vertical take-off and landing. The design of the hybrid propulsion aircraft mitigates undesirable transient behavior traditionally encountered during a transition from vertical flight to horizontal flight. Moreover, the hybrid propulsion aircraft offers a fast, constant-altitude transition, without requiring a climb or dive to transition. It also offers increased efficiency in both hover and forward flight versus other VTOL aircraft and a higher forward max speed than traditional rotorcraft.

Vertical take-off and landing aircraft using hybrid-electric propulsion system

A vertical take-off and landing aircraft using a hybrid electric propulsion system includes an engine, a generator that produces electric power using power supplied by the engine, and a battery that stores the produced electric power. A motor receives the electric power stored in the battery and electric power produced by the generator but not stored in the battery and provides the power to a thrust generating apparatus. A controller selects either silence mode or normal mode, and determines the amount of electric power stored in the battery and the amount of electric power not stored in the battery from the electric power supplied to the motor. In the silence mode, the controller supplies only the electric power stored in the battery and controls a duration by adjusting output power of motor. The present invention is one kind of water-jetting propulsion system utilizing supercavitation in realizing vapor-liquid two phase propulsion. The water-jetting propulsion system consists of a water uptake chamber, a supercavitation impeller, an impeller chamber, a kinetic energy converter and a shafting. The supercavitation impeller with vanes designed based on Tulin supercavitating foil principle can operate normally under cavitation and supercavitation condition. Both the vapor phase and the liquid phase in the back of the impeller are converted in the kinetic energy converter before being jetted via the thruster to produce thrust in the outlet of the thruster. The kinetic energy converter can guide the flow of both the vapor phase and the liquid phase and convert the rotation kinetic energy of both the vapor phase and the liquid phase in the outlet of the impeller into axial flow kinetic energy without increasing the pressure of the two phase flow. The present invention realizes great power thrusting under cavitation condition.

For a typical orbit design, e.g. a geostationary orbit, North-South stationkeeping can be intermittently suspended, tolerating some additional drift but yielding in a very significant reduction in the required solar power system. If necessary, stationkeeping can be supplemented with a chemical thrusters during off periods for the electric propulsion. Because of this, the overall electrical power margin for the solar array system design can be reduced without compromising the mission performance.
