Aerosol-based detection of biological agents

The presence of an aerosol or cloud (3) of a toxic substance is detected by producing an aerosol (17, 5) of ligands (13) to the target substance in a region of sky that contains the target substance, permitting molecules the target substance to bind to the ligand, directing light (7, 21) of a first frequency into the revised aerosol; and then inspecting (9, 25) the revised aerosol for emissions of light of a second frequency. When light of the second frequency exists an alarm (15, 31) is initiated.

Femoral head resurfacing implant with internal plate fixation and instrumentation

The instantly disclosed implant is designed to resurface or partially replace (two versions) the arthritic or osteonecrotic femoral head in an anatomic fashion with maximum fixation, durability and stability. It will serve a wide range of patient ages, arthritic / traumatic deformity, and bone pathologies while providing for high performance activity. The implant has absolute fixation utilizing existing, contoured femoral head bone with or without bone cement / porous texturing, an internal plate with modular head attachment, and advantageously benefit from the concurrent use of precision guided instrumentation. This implant optimizes maximal femoral head contact with or without porous contact surfaces but does not rely purely on the head for long term stability. This new concept prevents the common failure mechanisms of femoral neck fracture, loosening and malpositioning as well as makes patient bone quality less important for this high performance hip resurfacing implant.

Method of producing a branched carbon nanotube for use with an atomic force microscope

A method of producing a branched carbon nanotube (CNT) is disclosed. The branched CNT is used with an atomic force microscope having a cantilever and a tip and that is able to measure a surface of a substrate as well as an undercut feature of the substrate that protrudes from the surface. A catalytic material is deposited onto the tip of the microscope, and the catalytic material is subjected to chemical vapor deposition. This initiates growth of a primary branch of the branched carbon nanotube such that the primary branch extends from the tip. A secondary branch is then introduced to extend from the primary branch and produce the branched carbon nanotube. The primary branch interacts with the surface of the substrate and the secondary branch interacts with the undercut feature.

Connector for electronic detonators

Fire, arm, and disarm signals are typically transmitted to electronic detonators via signal transmission lines. Traditionally, such signal transmission lines include wires wherein one end of each wire is soldered directly to printed circuit boards and or other signal processing components retained within the shell of a detonator. Other ‘modular’ blasting apparatuses of the prior art provide means to connect signal transmission lines to detonators in the field. Signal transmission line / detonator contacts are susceptible to disruption, particularly when the signal transmission lines are subject to inadvertent tugging or tensile forces at the blast site. The present application discloses an electrical connector that enables secure connection between a signal transmission line and any detonator adapted to receive and optionally process electrical signals from the signal transmission line. Specifically, the electrical connector can be affixed to the signal input end of a detonator, and includes at least one bridge element to provide electrical contact between a signal transmission line, and internal electrical component(s) of the detonator.

Each tissue ablation probe comprises an electrically conductive probe shaft, at least one tissue ablation electrode carried by a distal end of the probe shaft, and an electrically insulative outer sheath disposed on the probe shaft. The sheath is at least partially composed of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and another material comprising condensed-phase particles interspersed throughout the PEEK to increase the echogenicity of the outer sheath. The durability of the PEEK allows the sheath to be formed as thinly as possible, thereby minimizing the diameter of the ablation probe, while the inclusion of condensed-phase particles within the PEEK does not significantly degrade the durability of the sheath.
