A method and system for Extensible Markup Language (XML) application transformation may include converting a call flow diagram describing a voice interface process into a list of states in a XML format, and creating a lookup table of audio states in the XML format by mapping a plurality of audio prompts and their corresponding textual representations with states of a list of states that play audio files associated with the plurality of audio prompts. The method and system may include creating an intermediate application in the XML format and from the list of states by merging audio prompts in the lookup table with states of the list of states that play audio files, and transforming the intermediate application into a second application of a second format that is a representation of the call flow diagram.

The present invention produces a combustion simulation of flames, burning logs and embers in a fuel-burning fireplace or like device. One or more light source(s), such as LEDs, are used to transmit light to and through: a flame cut-out panel or flame cut-out mask to simulate the flame effect; cut-outs in logs to simulate a burning edge of a log; elements or refractories that refract the light to simulate real burning embers. Fiber optic cables, or any other material that facilitates the transmission of light, may be used to assist in transmitting the visible light. A motor driven rotating disk that includes apertures may be used to fragment the transmission of the visible light. In addition, the light source may be controlled by a sequencing device to closely approximate the pulsing intensities of light seen in actual flames, the edges of burning logs, and ember beds.

The present invention provides a method of providing a communications protocol for processing a signal in a processing apparatus having a processor and memory, the protocol defined by a plurality of protocol layers; the method comprising: loading a software module into the memory, the module arranged to receive and process said signal according to a set of generic functions corresponding to one of said layers, the module comprising generic function pointers corresponding to said generic functions in a function mapping object; loading said function mapping object into the memory, the object comprising apparatus specific function pointers corresponding to the generic functions in order to map a said generic function to one or more apparatus specific functions; executing the module according to said mapped apparatus specific functions in order to process received signals according to said protocol layer.

A method for forming a nanowhisker of, e.g., a III-V semiconductor material on a silicon substrate, comprises: preparing a surface of the silicon substrate with measures including passivating the substrate surface by HF etching, so that the substrate surface is essentially atomically flat. Catalytic particles on the substrate surface are deposited from an aerosol; the substrate is annealed; and gases for a MOVPE process are introduced into the atmosphere surrounding the substrate, so that nanowhiskers are grown by the VLS mechanism. In the grown nanowhisker, the crystal directions of the substrate are transferred to the epitaxial crystal planes at the base of the nanowhisker and adjacent the substrate surface. A segment of an optically active material may be formed within the nanowhisker and bounded by heterojunctions so as to create a quantum well wherein the height of the quantum well is much greater than the thermal energy at room temperature, whereby the luminescence properties of the segment remain constant without quenching from cryogenic temperatures up to room temperature.

A catheter assembly includes a catheter hub defining an interior cavity and a catheter tube extending distally thereof. A rigid actuator extends proximally in the interior cavity and supports a seal member thereon. The seal member includes a central membrane, a distal portion, and a proximal portion. An hourglass shaped actuator cavity is formed in the distal portion and receives a barbed end of the actuator. The outer surface of the seal member is in partial circumferential engagement with the catheter hub to define an air path that allows fluid communication between areas of the interior cavity distal and proximal of the seal member. A punch tool is provided to form a tri-slit in the membrane of the seal member. The seal member may be configured for multi-use and include a biasing member that moves the seal member to force the membrane back over the actuator to close the membrane.

The present invention is directed to a method of applying radiation through an optical fiber for detecting disease within a plant or animal or imaging a particular tissue of a plant or animal. In addition, fluorescence can be detected and localized within a subject by such application of radiation through an optical fiber. The radiation is effective to promote simultaneous multiphoton excitation. The optical fibers are used alone to examine internal regions of tissue, in conjunction with an optical biopsy needle to evaluate sub-surface tissue, or with an endoscope to evaluate tissue within body cavities.

A perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) head is fabricated with a pole tip shielded laterally by a separated pair of bottom side shields and shielded from above by an upper shield. The bottom side shields surround a lower portion of the pole tip while the upper portion of the pole tip is surrounded by non-magnetic layers. The bottom shields and the non-magnetic layer form wedge-shaped trench in which the pole tip is formed by a self-aligned plating process. The wedge shape is formed by a RIE process using specific gases applied through a masking layer formed of material that has a slower etch rate than the non-magnetic material or the shield material. A masking layer of Ta, Ru/Ta, TaN or Ti, formed on a non-magnetic layer of alumina that is formed on a shield layer of NiFe and using RIE gases of CH₃OH, CO or NH₃ or their combinations, produces the desired result. A write gap layer and an upper shield is then formed above the side shields and pole. The resulting structure substantially eliminates track overwrite while maintaining good track definition.

A multi-state low-current-switching magnetic memory element (magnetic memory element) comprising a free layer, two stacks, and a magnetic tunneling junction is disclosed. The stacks and magnetic tunneling junction are disposed upon surfaces of the free layer, with the magnetic tunneling junction located between the stacks. The stacks pin magnetic domains within the free layer, creating a free layer domain wall. A current passed from stack to stack pushes the domain wall, repositioning the domain wall within the free layer. The position of the domain wall relative to the magnetic tunnel junction corresponds to a unique resistance value, and passing current from a stack to the magnetic tunnel junction reads the magnetic memory element's resistance. Thus, unique memory states may be achieved by moving the domain wall.

According to a present invention embodiment, safety is enhanced for a non-eye-safe limited-range laser sensing system. The laser sensing system typically has an operating range limited to a well-defined spatial interval. A range measurement is utilized to control emissions of the non-eye-safe laser. In particular, when the range to a target is outside the designed spatial interval defining the operating range of the laser sensing system, transmission of the non-eye-safe laser beam is disabled or rendered non-hazardous. In other words, the transmission of the non-eye-safe laser beam is disabled in response to no detection of a hard target within the operating range of the laser sensing system, or when an object is detected between the laser sensing system and the spatial interval that defines the operating range. The target distance may be tracked to change the location (and possibly, width) of the adaptive spatial interval defining the operating range.

Described is a method and array for magnetizing a magnetizable object. The method includes the steps of (a) applying a first degaussing signal to the magnetizable object to degauss the magnetizable object and the first degaussing signal is an alternating electrical signal having a first frequency and a first amplitude; (b) applying a magnetizing signal to the degaussed magnetizable object to magnetize the magnetizable object; and (c) applying a second degaussing signal to the magnetized magnetizable object to partially degauss the magnetized magnetizable object and the second degaussing signal is an alternating electrical signal having a second frequency and a second amplitude.

A positional adjusting mechanism for a cutting insert in a tool for chip removing machining, preferably a milling cutter. The positional adjusting mechanism includes a hole formed in the tool body adjacent to the cutting seat which receives the cutting insert. A slotted bushing is mounted in that hole. An adjusting screw is received in the bushing to expand an upper end of the bushing. In the mounted state of the bushing in its hole, contact occurs between an upper part of the bushing and a support surface of the tool body which urges the bushing laterally in its hole to eliminate lateral play and thus stabilizes the bushing.
