Iota carrageenan is a hydrocolloid taken from red seaweed Eucheuma dentilculatum. It is one of three varieties of carrageenan and is used mainly as a thickening or gelling agent.

Non-gelatin capsule shell formulation

A film-forming hydrocolloid composition comprising kappa carrageenan, iota carrageenan, a bulking agent, plasticizer and water is described. The ratio of bulking agent to total carrageenan is from about 1:1 to 20:1. Kappa carrageenan is present in an amount of less than or equal to 50% by weight of total carrageenan present. To form the composition, all dry materials are mixed and added to a heated mixture of all liquid materials. The final mixture is heated until a composition free of particulate materials is formed. The formed composition can be cast or extruded into ribbons, films, sheets, tubes or the like, for encapsulating wet or dry materials including medicinal dosage forms, nutritional supplements, cosmetics, bath oils and gels, and paint balls.

Storable cementitious slurries containing boric acid and method of using the same

A storable, hydraulically-active, cementitious slurry is made and used to cement within subterranean foundations for oil and gas wells. The slurry is made from a hydraulically-active cementitious material, a suspending agent, and, as a retarder, boric acid. The boric acid is present in the cementitious slurry in an amount sufficient to lower the pH of the storable cementitious slurry to at least 12.0, preferably to at least 11.0 or preferably, for reasons of longevity, to a pH of at least 9.0. Generally the amount of boric acid in the cementitious slurry is between from about 1 to about 6 percent by weight. Preferred as suspending agent are iota carrageenan as well as poly (methyl vinyl ether / maleic anhydride) decadiene copolymer. The slurry remains liquid during storage. The slurry is activated when needed for cementing and is pumped into the subterranean formation where it is allowed to set.

Method for preparing Iota-carrageenan

The invention relates to a method for preparing Iota-carrageenan. The method comprises the following steps of: performing alkali modification on a raw material in 3-7 percent by mass percent of potassium hydroxide; neutralizing the modified raw material in a diluted acid solution till the pH is 7-8; washing the modified raw material liquid with water after neutralizing; performing microwave radiation treatment with the microwave radiation power of 180-450W for 5-20 minutes; boiling with water at high temperature for extracting colloid; and adding 0.01-0.1 percent of potassium permangenate aidduring colloid extraction to obtain high-yield and high-jel-strength Iota-carrageenan. Due to the adoption of potassium hydroxide, the loss of colloid during alkali treatment can be reduced; the diluted acid is used for neutralizing, so that the water amount is greatly reduced; microwave radiation treatment is performed, and an aid is added for extracting colloid, so that the colloid can be dissolved out more easily, and the gel strength is increased; and the method has a wide application prospect.

Electrical Nutritional Supplement

A object of the present invention is to provide a novel system whereby an enteral nutrient or an enriched liquid food can be solidified so that it can be easily administered within a short period of time without liguefying in the body to thereby lighten a care-giver's burden in tube feeding such as gastrostomic feeding. As the results of studies, it is found out that such a nutrient or an enriched liquid food can be quickly thickened or solidified at a temperature of 40° C. or below by using a starch adhesive, which contains as the main component sodium iota-carrageenan, sodium kappa-carrageenan, sodium lambda-carrageenan or a mixture thereof, without dissolving the starch adhesive by heating. Further, it was confirmed that it is an administration method almost free from water liberation when the solidified product was administered from a syringe, thus the present invention was completed. That is, the use of the above carrageenan as a starch adhesive (a semi-solidifying agent) makes it possible to produce the desired semi-solidified enteral nutrient as described above.
