Apparatus and method for reducing the risk of decubitus ulcers

There is provided herein a sensor for use in patient monitoring, wherein the level of patient activity in a chair or bed is tracked to determine whether or not that patient has exhibited sufficient activity to merit eliminating a scheduled assisted relocation to a new position. The instant device senses the time since a patient last relocated into a different sitting or lying position. If the patient has not moved during some predetermined time period, the nursing staff will be notified that it is time to manually reposition the patient. On the other hand, if the patient has significantly changed position, the device will not signal to the caregiver that a move is necessary, thereby eliminating the need in some cases to rouse the patient from an otherwise sound sleep.

Method and apparatus for detecting vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque

Methods and devices are disclosed for detecting vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque, or plaque at risk of reducing blood flow in a vessel, by identifying a region of elevated temperature along a living vessel wall. The disclosure that human atherosclerotic plaque with measurable temperature heterogeneity has the morphological characteristics of plaque that is likely to ulcerate provides a new and sensitive technique for detecting and treating these dangerous plaques before myocardial infarction and its consequences occur. The disclosed methods are advantageous over conventional plaque detection techniques because they are capable of differentiating between those plaques that are at great risk of rupture, fissure, or ulceration, and consequent thrombosis and occlusion of the artery, and those that are not presently at risk. Infrared heat-sensing catheters useful for identifying potentially fatal arterial plaques in patients with disease of the coronary or other arteries are also described. In some embodiments a coherent infrared fiber optic bundle is employed to radially and longitudinally explore a luminal wall to identify inflamed, heat-producing, atherosclerotic plaque. Certain other methods and devices are disclosed which are particularly suited for non-invasively identifying and then monitoring the progression or amelioration of an inflamed plaque in a patient, and for monitoring for onset of inflammation in an implanted arteriovenous graft. Also disclosed are thermocouple basket catheters and thermistor basket catheters which are also capable of detecting temperature heterogeneity along a vessel wall.

System and method for continuous monitoring of a human foot for signs of ulcer development

The present invention pertains to a system and method for monitoring a human foot by measuring pressures applied to regions of the foot or by measuring another tissue-health related condition. A light source in the 400 nm to 1400 nm range and a detector can be embedded in a wearable article that contacts tissue while in use, spaced 200 μm to 1 cm apart, and measure a tissue hemoglobin condition. A pressure-sensing array may be read by a low-power control circuit, and a power source can be incorporated in the article. An external processing unit wirelessly coupled to the control circuit can relate pressures measured with counts that are associated with injury risk, and an alert system can notify a patient if the counts exceed a predetermined threshold. A relationship between pressure experienced by a region of tissue and the risk of ulcer development in that region may be derived.

Protecting colloid for gastroenteric mucosa

The invention relates to protecting colloid for gastroenteric mucosa, belonging to the field of biomedical preparation and comprising a collagenous substance, an acidifying or alkalizing agent, a cross-linking agent and an adhesive based on the weight ratio of 1:0.01-0.3:0.1-0.5, wherein the dosage of the acidifying or alkalizing agent is proper when the pH value is regulated to 6.5-8.5. Under the action of gastric acid, the cross-linking agent in the protecting colloid can be released so as to form a colloid membrane on the surface of ulcer, avoid the gastroenteric mucosa from being digested by gastric acid and pepsase and promote healing of the ulcer. Animal tests show that the protecting colloid can greatly lower the ulcer formation caused by absolute ethyl alcohol and hydrochloric acid, inhibit ulcer formation and have a protecting effect on injury of the mice gastroenteric mucosa caused by absolute ethyl alcohol and hydrochloric acid. Therefore, the protecting colloid is used for protecting and curing gastroenteric mucosa ulcer for patients.

Footwear system for ulcer or pre-ulcer detection

ActiveCN108471946ADo not deviate from the true rangeThermometer detailsBody temperature measurementEngineeringUlcer care
A footwear system having a plurality of temperature sensors determines the emergence of an ulcer or pre-ulcer on a person's foot. After the plurality of temperature sensors generate a plurality of discrete temperature data values, the system and method form a temperature map representing substantially the actual geometric shape of at least a portion of the foot, and the distribution of temperatures of the at least a portion of the foot. Next, the method and system determine whether the temperature map presents at least one of a plurality of prescribed patterns, and produces output informationindicating an emergence of an ulcer or a pre-ulcer on a given portion on the foot. The output information is produced as a function of whether the temperature map is determined to present the at leastone of the plurality of prescribed patterns.
