System and method for optimizing a storage system to support full utilization of storage space

A system and method for optimizing a storage system to support full utilization of storage space are provided. With the system and method, data objects / containers of data objects are assigned retention values when they are created. These retention values may be dynamically modified based on a modification function associated with the data objects / containers. When storage space needs to be freed for the storage of new data objects / containers, the retention values of existing data objects / containers provide a prioritization as to which data objects / containers should be deleted from the storage system and the order by which these data objects / containers are to be deleted to make available storage space for the new data objects / containers. The identification of the data objects / containers that are to be deleted may be based on a dynamically modified delete threshold, a sorted list of retention values, or the like.

The invention relates to a method of creating a virtual memory space in a memory. In order to improve the efficiency of the memory, the method comprises determining whether additional memory space is needed in the memory. If additional memory space is needed, selected portions of memory content stored in the memory are compressed. Memory space which is no longer needed by the compressed selected portions of memory content is released for use as virtual memory space. The invention relates equally to a memory manager controlling a memory accordingly, to a system comprising such a memory manager and a memory, and to a software realizing the steps of the method when running in a memory manager.

System and method for optimizing a storage system to support short data lifetimes

A system and method for optimizing a storage system to support short data object lifetimes and highly utilized storage space are provided. With the system and method, data objects are clustered based on when they are anticipated to be deleted. When an application stores data, the application provides an indicator of the expected lifetime of the data, which may be a retention value, a relative priority of the data object, or the like. Data objects having similar expected lifetimes are clustered together in common data structures so that clusters of objects may be deleted efficiently in a single operation. Expected lifetimes may be changed by applications automatically. The system automatically determines how to handle these changes in expected lifetime using one or more of copying the data object, reclassifying the container in which the data object is held, and ignoring the change in expected lifetime for a time to investigate further changes in expected lifetime of other data objects.

Virtual channels and corresponding buffer allocations for deadlock-free computer system operation

A computer system employs virtual channels and allocates different resources to the virtual channels. Packets which do not have logical / protocol-related conflicts are grouped into a virtual channel. Accordingly, logical conflicts occur between packets in separate virtual channels. The packets within a virtual channel may share resources (and hence experience resource conflicts), but the packets within different virtual channels may not share resources. Since packets which may experience resource conflicts do not experience logical conflicts, and since packets which may experience logical conflicts do not experience resource conflicts, deadlock-free operation may be achieved. Additionally, each virtual channel may be assigned control packet buffers and data packet buffers. Control packets may be substantially smaller in size, and may occur more frequently than data packets. By providing separate buffers, buffer space may be used efficiently. If a control packet which does not specify a data packet is received, no data packet buffer space is allocated. If a control packet which does specify a data packet is received, both control packet buffer space and data packet buffer space is allocated.

Adaptive range filters for range and point queries

ActiveUS20140195542A1Minimize unnecessary accessData access can be discouragedDigital data information retrievalDigital data processing detailsAdaptive filterPooled data
The technique described herein provides a way to summarize data and can also minimize unnecessary accesses to a data store. In one embodiment, the technique creates and stores an adaptive range filter that contains a compact summary of the contents of an index for a data store in the form of a trie data structure. Before accessing the index of the data store in response to a query, the technique checks the filter to determine whether the data store does not contain any keys for a specific range of data. If the adaptive range filter indicates that the index contains no keys satisfying the query predicate, the index of the data store and the data itself is not accessed. The adaptive range filter of the technique supports both range predicates and equality predicates. It is adaptive to changes in data and queries by learning the query and data distribution.
