Minimally invasive surgical apparatus

The present invention encompasses tools and a tool-holding retractor assembly. The retractor assembly spreads an incision and holds the incision open. At least one extension device, having a tool holder on one end, attaches to the assembly. The holder includes a selectively locking multi-axis adjustable mounting element adapted to grip a tool shaft. The mounting element acts as a universal mounting providing rotational and sliding movement of the tool shaft. The extension device adjusts to position the tool holder peripherally of the surgical field. Once the retractor is placed, the extension device provides full access to regions below the incision. The extension device allows the surgeon to chose the insertion point and insertion angle of the tool shaft.

Dialysis machine with symmetric multi-processing (SMP) control system and method of operation

A method and control system computing platform for a dialysis machine that uses Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) architecture. The SMP architecture tightly couples multiple (e.g., 2) independent processors by sharing memory between the processors. A single shared memory is used by both processors in order to facilitate communication between the processors and reduce cost by eliminating the expense of redundant memory. In this way, the two, or in general “N” processors, increase processor throughput by allowing the execution of N processes in parallel while without requiring extra memory and without having a single point of failure in the computer. In the event of a bus failure on the circuit card, the computer is reset using distributed hardware watchdogs. The watchdog reset signal is also sent to the hardware components of the dialysis machine in order to place the system in a safe.

Switch for turning off therapy delivery of an active implantable medical device during MRI scans

An MRI-compatible electronic medical therapy system is provided for temporarily preventing current flow through an implanted lead wire in the presence of an induced radio frequency, magnetic, or static field. One or more normally closed switches are disposed in series between the AIMD and the one or more distal electrodes. The switch may be incorporated in the AIMD, lead wire, or within or adjacent to the electrode. The switch remains closed during normal AIMD-related therapy, but temporarily opens in the presence of an induced radio frequency, magnetic, or static field so as to prevent current flow through the electrode and lead wire. The switches prevent current from circulating that could be induced by a medical therapeutic diagnostic device, which can cause overheating of lead wires, excessive currents or temperatures and tissue damage.

Low temperature cooler

The invention is directed to a low-temperature cooler using dry ice as a cooling agent. The cooler has two compartments, one for the dry ice and one for chilled storage. The cooler self-regulates via an aqueous filled temperature-regulating valve to maintain a desired temperature in the storage compartment such that the products stored therein are stored at an optimum temperature. Upon achieving a predetermined temperature in the storage compartment, the valve closes, thereby maintaining the predetermined temperature in the storage compartment.

ActiveUS7055627B2Improve bit cleaningLoss of circulationConstructionsFluid removalLine tubingWell drilling
The present invention provides drilling systems for drilling wellbores. The drilling system includes an umbilical that passes through a wellhead and carries a drill bit. A drilling fluid system supplies drilling fluid into an annulus (supply line) between the umbilical and the wellbore, which discharges at the drill bit bottom and returns to the wellhead through the umbilical (return line) carrying the drill cuttings. A fluid circulation device, such as a turbine or centrifugal pump, is operated in the return line to provide the primary motive force for circulating drilling fluid through a fluid circuit formed by the supply line and return line. Optionally, a secondary fluid circulation device in fluid communication with the return line can cooperate with the fluid circulation device to circulate drilling fluid and / or a near bit fluid circulation device can be used to provide localized flow control or suction pressure to improve bit cleaning.

Passive syrup delivery system

A pump transfers syrup through a supply line and through a valve assembly for mixing with ice cream in a mixing chamber to form a frozen dessert or milkshake. When the syrup flows through the passive valve, the pressure along the supply line increases. When syrup delivery is complete, a first timer is initiated to dispense ice cream into the mixing chamber for 0.4 seconds to flush out any remaining syrup. A second timer is also initiated when the syrup delivery is complete to reverse the pump for 0.2 seconds to remove the residual pressure in the supply line. By removing the residuals pressure, syrup in the supply line is prevented from oozing out of the valve apparatus and into the mixing chamber.

Aerosol patient preparatory applicator

An applicator for an anti-microbial solution includes an aerosol container and an applicator pad assembly having a hollow arm. The hollow arm has a proximal end attached to an aerosol cap and a distal end having a flanged arm plate to receive a foam applicator pad. The aerosol cap is removably attached to the aerosol container. A solution flow control is in communication with the aerosol container for selectively dispensing the anti-microbial solution. The aerosol container holds the anti-microbial solution under pressure and flow is controlled by a pressure-sensitive flow control tab. The control tab activates the flow of the anti-microbial solution from the aerosol container through the hollow handle to the foam pad and then to the patient. The control tab may be actuated by touch or by pressure applied to the applicator pad. An optional flow control feature, in addition to the control tab, is a slit formed in the foam pad. The slit is designed so that it remains closed when no pressure is exerted on the distal surface of the foam pad. However, when pressure is exerted on the distal surface of the foam pad, such as when the applicator is pressed against a patient's skin, the slit opens to allow the anti-microbial solution to flow past the slit into the foam pad. There the anti-microbial solution can be easily distributed over the patient's skin by the foam pad. When a sufficient amount of the anti-microbial solution has flowed into the foam pad, the healthcare professional can release the pressure sensitive control tab to stop the flow of anti-microbial solution out of the aerosol container.
