Method for assisted beam selection in radiation therapy planning

A method to assist in the selection of optimum beam orientations for radiation therapy when a planning treatment volume (PTV) is adjacent to one or more organs-at-risk (OARs). A mathematical analysis of the boundaries between the PTV and OARs allows the definition of a continuum of pairs of gantry and table angles whose beam orientations have planes that are essentially parallel to those boundaries, and can, therefore, separate the PTV from the OARs when a multi-leaf collimator is used in the therapy. The Radiation Oncologist can then select one or more pairs of gantry and table angles from the continuum as input to a beam optimization step. The selected angles can deliver highly uniform dose to the PTV, while minimizing the radiation dose to the OARs.

Interstitial microwave antenna with miniaturized choke hyperthermia in medicine and surgery

The present invention relates to minimally invasive surgery techniques. It provides a method for manufacturing an antenna for percutaneous acute hyperthermia microwave applications of the monopole or dipole co-axial type provided with trap, commonly called choke, for blocking the propagation of the backwards reflecting wave towards the generator. The miniaturization of the device allows a use minimally invasive for interstitial hyperthermia in medicine and surgery, in particular for oncology. The method of manufacturing the antenna provides a metal needle (1) for the introduction of the antenna (2,3,4) in the target tissue. On the external conductor (4) of the antenna (2) a metal collar 6 is connected in a predetermined position; a plastics sheath (5) is applied in order to cover the external conductor (2) in the portion between the feed (7) and the collar 6; the inner wall of the metal needle 1 wherein the antenna is inserted is then used for containing and guiding the collar 6 and the sheath 5; in particular, the collar 6 being in electrical contact with the inner wall of the metal needle 1. An antenna is thus obtained with choke of variable length and with miniaturized diameter. A thermocouple can be introduced through the choke that protrudes the directly in the “feed” zone.

Nanoparticle loaded stem cells and their use in MRI guided hyperthermia

The present invention provides stem cells loaded with bi-functional magnetic nanoparticles (nanoparticle-loaded stem cells (NLSC)) that both: a) heat in an alternating magnetic field (AMF); and b) provide MRI contrast enhancement for MR-guided hyperthermia. The nanoparticles in the NLSC are non-toxic, and do not alter stem cell proliferation and differentiation, the nanoparticles do however, become heated in an alternating magnetic field, enabling therapeutic applications for cancer treatment. NLSC can deliver hyperthermia to hypoxic areas in tumors for sensitization of those areas to subsequent treatment, thus delivering therapy to the most treatment-resistant tumor regions. The heating of diseased tissue either results in direct cell killing or makes the tumor more susceptible to radio- and / or chemotherapy. The NLSC of the present invention can be used for MR image-guided hyperthermia in oncology, in stem cell research for cell tracking and heating, and for elimination of mis-injected stem cells.

Semi-automatic segmentation algorithm for pet oncology images

An apparatus and method for segmenting three-dimensional (3D) medical images containing a region of interest is provided that identifies a first set of seed points within the region of interest and a second set of seed points outside the region of interest. A first sphere is constructed within the region of interest. Voxels contained within the medical image are classified using a spatial constrained fuzzy clustering algorithm. A plurality of second spheres is generated. Ones of the plurality of second spheres are accepted that satisfy the homogeneity function threshold as defined by the spatial constricted fuzzy clustering algorithm. A three-dimensional area is grown that defines the region of interest. The region of interest defined by the three-dimensional area is displayed.
